    [02] Spokesman - Talks - EU summit

Nicosia, Nov 26 (CNA) -- The government is cautiously optimistic with regard to next month's European Union summit, in Helsinki, but believes there is not much room for optimism about the UN sponsored proximity talks.

The government also thinks that the return of the Turkish occupied town of Varosha to its inhabitants would be a "serious development" and hopes that more voices of dissent with the official Turkish policy on Cyprus will be heard.

    [03] Spokesman - Missing - Greece

Nicosia, Nov 26 (CNA) -- The Greek government has contributed 100,000 US dollars to the process of exhumation and identification of remains of war dead and missing persons of the 1974 Turkish invasion, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said.

The process of exhumation started in June this year, following a cabinet decision to exhume remains buried in the southern government controlled areas of the Republic with a view to identify remains and inform the families concerned.

[06] Greek Foreign Minister - Parties

Nicosia, Nov 26 (CNA) -- The Greek government now has a much clearer idea about the views of the political parties here, following separate meetings Greece's Foreign Minister George Papandreou had today with party leaders.

The parties themselves speak of a concerted effort by Athens and Nicosia, in view of next month's UN-led proximity talks in New York and the European Union summit in Helsinki, to get the best possible results in the interests of both countries.

[07] Greek Foreign Minister - Departure

Nicosia, Nov 26 (CNA) -- Greek Foreign Minister, George Papandreou, assured today that Greece supports Cyprus, and that Greece will weigh the interests of Greece and Cyprus at the forthcoming Helsinki European Union summit, before making its final decisions.

Speaking at Larnaca International Airport on his departure from Cyprus, Papandreou said that "we are going to Helsinki stronger" and that "we shall balance the interests not only of Greece, but also of Cyprus, and we will make our final decisions".

"At the same time", he said, "we will continue the common effort for a just and viable solution (of the Cyprus problem), for a democratic and united Cyprus", adding that "the Cypriot Hellenism knows that we support it and that we will give this common struggle together".

During his two-day trip to Cyprus, Papandreou was received by President Glafcos Clerides, Archbishop Chrysostomos and held talks with his Cypriot counterpart Ioannis Kasoulides and political party leaders.
