[01] British High Commissioner - Cyprus problem
Nicosia, Nov 11 (CNA) -- British High Commissioner in Nicosia Edward Clay
today said a lot of preparatory work is underway outside Cyprus so that
negotiations begin to reach a settlement on the island based on UN
resolutions.
Clay said all contacts going on are held in close consultation with
the Cyprus government and other parties interested in finding a good future
for the island.

[02] Cyprus - War veterans - Ceremony
Nicosia, Nov 11 (CNA) -- Cypriot war veterans today expressed sorrow
because the principles they had fought for during World War II are being
violated in their homeland since the Turkish invasion and occupation 25
years ago.
Their feelings were echoed by Acting President, House of
Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou who told a remembrance day
gathering that the people of Cyprus do not enjoy the ideals that many
people lost their lives for during the two world wars.

[03] Illegal regime - Condemnation events
Nicosia, Nov 11 (CNA) -- Preparations are underway by refugee and students'
associations to condemn the 16th anniversary since the illegal declaration
of an "independent state" in the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkey since
1974, which is recognised only by Ankara.
Announcing a number of events today, the Coordinating Committee of
municipalities, associations and other organisations of the Turkish
occupied town of Kyrenia called on US President Bill Clinton to prove
through his actions that he is struggling for justice and freedom to
prevail.

[04] Antiquities department - UNESCO - Illegal Turkish excavations
Nicosia, Nov 11 (CNA) -- Cyprus has condemned illegal excavations at the
ancient site of Salamina, in the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkey since
1974, during a discussion on cultural issues at the UNESCO general meeting
underway in Paris, according to an official announcement issued today.
Head of the Antiquities Department Sophocles Hadjisavvas refuted
claims by the Turkish delegation that tried to back the illegal excavations
by saying they are being carried out by a reputable Turkish scholar and
under the illegal "antiquities department" in the Turkish occupied areas.

[05] Philippines - New Cyprus ambassador
Nicosia, Nov 11 (CNA) -- Philippines President Joseph Ejercito Estrada
today said all possible ways in reaching a settlement to the Cyprus problem
should be examined and expressed his country's support to the Cyprus
government's efforts for a just and viable solution.
Receiving the credentials of Cyprus' new ambassador in his country,
Loria Markides who is based in China, the Philippines President expressed
the wish for the furthering of relations between the two countries.
