London, Oct 28 (CNA) -- British Prime Minister Tony Blair reconfirmed his
government's position that the political solution of the Cyprus problem is
not a precondition for Cyprus' accession to the European Union, (EU).
In statements to the CNA correspondent in the British capital, Blair
also promised that his government will give more time for the solution of
the Cyprus problem.

London, Oct 28 (CNA) -- British Labour Party Euro MP, Pauline Green
stressed that the European Union (EU) has not suggested opening accession
negotiations with Turkey if it becomes a candidate member during the
Helsinki European Council in December before a number of reforms take place
in the country.
In an interview with the London Greek Radio, Green, who is also
rapporteur for Cyprus at the European Parliament said she will carry out a
number of contacts in Cyprus where she is expected to arrive later today.

Nicosia, Oct 28 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides took the salute of a
students' parade here today outside the Greek Embassy, on the occasion of
the "OKHI" (NO) Day (October 28, 1940).
The anniversary marks Greece's refusal to surrender to an
unconditional ultimatum by the Axis forces and is celebrated in Cyprus with
church services and parades in all towns.
