    [02] President - UN envoy

    Nicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan does not intend to convene peace talks on Cyprus unless he is assured of their success, Annan's envoy for Cyprus James Holger said here today.

    He also stressed that the timing of the talks is very important and did not rule out the possibility of having the talks convene in the beginning of next year, instead of this year as the Secretary General intends to do and UN and other decisions call for.

    [03] Spokesman - Cyprus question - Talks

    Nicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government rejects any idea of a four- party meeting on the Cyprus issue, as supported yesterday by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said that if Denktash is ready for talks there is always the framework set out by the UN Security Council Resolution 1250 and the international community for UN sponsored unconditional talks.

    [04] Spokesman - European Commission - Cyprus - Athens meeting

    Nicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government is satisfied with the reference of the European Commission in its progress report on Cyprus that the Republic is ahead of other candidate member states in the accession negotiations.

    "I want to express the government's satisfaction that Cyprus has been described as the country which is ahead of other countries and that it is ready for this (accession) procedure," Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today.

    [05] Cyprus delegation - Krassnodar

    Larnaca, Oct 14 (CNA) -- Finance Minister, Takis Klirides, departed today for Krassnodar, head of a multi-member delegation, for the inauguration of the "Investment Bank of Kuban", 75% of which is held by the Cyprus Development Bank.

    Speaking on his departure, Klirides said that the Bank "brings the already close cooperation between Russia and Cyprus to higher levels."

    [06] Cyprus - Congress of Eurochambers - Clerides - Kasoulides

    Nicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) -- European Chambers of Commerce and Industry will sign their Charter for the 21st century on Friday during their seventh annual congress taking place here.

    "The Charter will state the main purpose, the objectives, the usefulness and contribution of the European chambers to business, the economy but also European society at large," Vasilis Rologis, President of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce said during the congress opening ceremony today.

    [07] KEVE - "Money Show '99"

    Nicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KEVE) President, Vassilis Rologis, said the Chamber believes in the future of the island's economy and in the need for closer economic relations with Greece.

    Speaking at a press conference on the "Money Show '99" meeting, October 16 - 17, Rologis said that a 1999 KEVE survey indicated that "another 500 Cypriot enterprises have shown interest in expanding to Greece or in cooperating with Greek companies in the Balkans and the region".

    [08] Cyprus Chief Negotiator - EU - Cyprus

    London, Oct 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus' chief negotiator in the accession negotiations with the European Union (EU), George Vassiliou, described the progress report of the European Commission on Cyprus as "objective".

    Vassiliou said the report released yesterday "praises us where we did well and criticises us where they think we should do better", noting that more work needs to be done.

    [09] Interior Minister - Suspension of top Immigration officials

    Nicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) -- Two top civil servants in the immigration department were suspended from their services today for three months pending investigations concerning the illegal supply of temporary residence and work permits to foreigner.

    Announcing the decision at a press conference here Thursday, Interior Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou said that in a letter yesterday, Police Chief Andreas Angelides asked for the suspension of Christodoulos Nicolaides and Nicos Vakanas of the Immigration Department.

    [10] Rolandis - Japan visit

    Nicosia, Oct 14 (CNA) -- Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister, Nicos Rolandis, who is on a six day official visit to Japan, stressed yesterday Cyprus' significance as a business center in the area.

    Rolandis held talks with Minister of International Trade and Industry F. Koji, whom he invited to visit Cyprus.
