    [01] Cyprus - South Africa - Tourism

    Nicosia, Oct 13 (CNA) -- A bilateral tourism agreement between South Africa and Cyprus is in the pipeline and once finalised will provide a useful framework for the further promotion of tourism between the two countries.

    This was pointed out by Athens-based High Commissioner of South Africa to Cyprus David Jacobs during a gathering in Nicosia to promote tourism between South Africa and Cyprus.

    [02] "Cyprus Agrifair" - "Watertech" - Inauguration

    Nicosia, Oct 13 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said here today that the harmonisation and adjustment of Cyprus' agricultural sector with the European standards will not only be achieved by the public services activities but farmers themselves have to play an important role.

    President Clerides, who was speaking during the opening ceremony of two specialised exhibitions, "Cyprus Agrifair" and "Watertech", in Nicosia, said the Cyprus government has introduced a number of measures to support the agricultural sector. During the past six years it has spent more than 300 million Cyprus pounds.

    [03] London Borough of Barnet - Resolution on Cyprus

    Nicosia, Oct 13 (CNA) -- The London Borough of Barnet adopted a resolution on Cyprus which urges British Prime Minister Tony Blair to take immediate and appropriate action to resolve Cyprus problem.

    The resolution submitted by the borough's Conservative Group also underlines that the course of Turkey's prospects to join the European Union (EU) depends on the Cyprus problem.

    [04] Spokesman - National Council - US officials

    Nicosia, Oct 13 (CNA) -- The National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem, will convene on October 22, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today.

    The meeting was originally scheduled to take place on October 18, but was postponed in view of the visit of US Presidential Emissary to Cyprus, Alfred Moses and US State Department Coordinator, Thomas Weston, due to arrive here on October 19.

    [05] European Commission - Cyprus - Progress report

    Brussels, Oct 13 (CNA) -- The progress report of the European Commission on Cyprus confirmed here Tuesday that the island is ahead of other candidate states in its course for accession to the European Union.

    It also notes that Cyprus fulfils the Copenhagen political criteria and adds that the European Union has repeatedly regretted the absence of Turkish Cypriots in the Cypriot negotiating team.

    [06] UN - Holger - Arrival

    Larnaca, Oct 13 (CNA) -- James Holger, Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary General arrived here today and will tomorrow meet with President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in a bid to get talks between the two sides started before the end of this year.

    Speaking on arrival at Larnaca Airport, Holger estimated that the UN sponsored talks on Cyprus will be a long process and called for the cooperation of all countries which have appointed special representatives on Cyprus.

    [07] Kasoulides - Papandreou - Meeting

    Nicosia, Oct 13 (CNA) -- Greek Foreign Minister, George Papandreou, reassured today that Greece will support Cyprus in the island's efforts to become a full member of the European Union.

    Speaking after a meeting in Athens with his Cypriot counterpart, Ioannis Kasoulides, Papandreou said that "we are sure that Cyprus will continue with the same intensity its (EU) accession course and of course it has nothing to fear".
