    [01] SOCCER: Cyprus 2 - Romania 2

Nicosia, Aug 19 (CNA) -- Cyprus' national soccer team drew 2 - 2 with Romania, in an international friendly game last night at Tsirion stadium in Limassol, Cyprus.

Cyprus opened the score through Costas Malekkos in the 14th minute and Romania equalised in the last minute of the first half through a penalty kick by Ioan Lupescu.

The Cypriot team doubled their goals in the 65th minute by Sinica Gogic. Romania scored a second goal in the 75th minute by Iulian Filipescu.

Romanian goalkeeper Bogdan Stelea was sent off in the 34th for handling outside his area.

The two teams clashed in a friendly warm-up match in view of their next games for the qualifying round for the Euro 2000 championship.

Romania face Slovakia and Portugal in their next group seven qualifiers next month.

Cyprus will play against Israel and Spain next month for the Euro 2000 group six qualifying round.

In the afternoon yesterday at the same stadium Cyprus Under 21 team beat 5 - 4 the Romanian side in a friendly match.

    [02] Cyprus - Doctors - Aid - Turkey

Nicosia, Aug 19 (CNA) -- A Cypriot delegation of Doctors of the World leaves for Turkey via Athens Thursday to help in the rescue efforts there underway since Tuesday's fatal 7.4 earthquake.

At the same time, the Cyprus Red Cross has made a donation for relief efforts to the organisation's headquarters in Geneva.

Speaking to CNA, Neofytos Xenofontos, of the local branch of Doctors of the World, said a doctor and a nurse will be on their way to Athens this afternoon following arrangements with the Turkish Consulate.

From there, the delegation is hoping to leave for Turkey the soonest to offer its assistance.

"In addition, we have launched a donation campaign with Radio Station Astra to raise funds to purchase medical supplies which will in turn be sent to Turkey via Greek Airforce transport planes", Xenofontos said.

A second mission will arrive in Turkey later to replace the two who are leaving today, he added.

"We are going to Turkey because we are a humanitarian organisation and we are implementing the principles of the Doctors of the World which are to help and care", Xenofontos noted.

Meanwhile, Zeta Miltiadou, Secretary of the Cyprus Red Cross, told CNA the branch has donated a symbolic sum of 2.000 Cyprus pounds (One Cyprus Pound trades at 1.8 US Dollars) to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Geneva to be used for relief efforts.

"The Cyprus Red Cross always responds to appeals by the International Red Cross which asks for financial assistance to purchase the necessary equipment", Miltiadou added.

Already, Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides expressed deep sympathy to his Turkish counterpart Suleyman Demirel and promised medical aid to help victims of Tuesday's quake.

[03] Cyprus halloumi - USA - Certification mark

Nicosia, Aug 19 (CNA) -- Cyprus' eight-year battle to defend its exclusive rights to the halloumi cheese certification mark culminated in victory for the Republic this week when the United States Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, in a 15-page ruling, struck down a Danish challenge and ruled in favour of Cyprus.

The Cyprus Embassy Trade Centre Commercial Counsellor in New York Dennis Droushiotis said "this vindication of our rights by the US government is doubly important".

He said this decision "safeguards our increasingly valuable commercial rights to the halloumi cheese" and "upholds and reaffirms the basic contention of our case, namely that the name 'Halloumi' is not generic, that the cheese is a distinctive product indigenous to Cyprus, in fact, part of the fabric of our national history and culture and thus can only be made using the historic method unique to Cyprus".

The petition to cancel the registered Halloumi mark was brought in 1991 by the Danish Dairy Board, a quasi - governmental instrumentality of the Kingdom of Denmark, against the Cyprus Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, representing the interests of cheese manufacturers of Cyprus who stood to lose an increasingly profitable market in the event of an adverse ruling.

The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism was originally granted the Certification Mark by the US Patent and Trademark Office in April of 1990.

Retail sales of halloumi cheese in the US now exceed 5 million dollars annually with the cheese increasingly available in many US supermarkets.

The success of halloumi cheese also paved the way for the introduction of other Cypriot cheeses such as anari, feta, kefalotyri and most recently a chevre type goat cheese.

The legal evidence Cyprus submitted to the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board in support of its case was "extremely comprehensive and exhaustive," noted American attorney Coast Kensington, a principal in the law firm Kensington & Ressler LLC, representing Cyprus.

[04] Mediterranean Peace Cruise - Cyprus

Larnaca, Aug 19 (CNA) -- A vessel, which operates the "Mediterranean Peace Cruise", an event aimed at promoting cooperation and brotherhood among the youth of Mediterranean countries, arrived here today.

The cruise is organised by the World Scout Movement in cooperation with the European Youth Forum, the European Commission and UNESCO.

The vessel, which belongs to Polish Scouts, set sail on August 8, from Alexandria, Egypt, and will conclude the Cruise in the Greek port of Piraeus on September 14.

Larnaca's Mayor George Lycourgos and the Cyprus Scouts Association (CSA) hold tonight a welcome reception for the crew at the town's City Hall.

Larnaca's District Scout Commissioner Christos Marneros told CNA the reception includes Cyprus folk-dance and a photo exhibition.

He said "the aim of the event is to promote peace, brotherhood and cooperation among the peoples of the Mediterranean and Europe".

Marneros said 27 children had come to Cyprus by air to replace the same number of crew members.

The children will stay in Cyprus until August 21. During their stay they will visit various places, including the ceasefire line.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.

Cruise Director Richard Amilvay told CNA "the children on board will be trained on specifications like negotiation, mediation, conflict resolution and prevention of conflict".

Amilvay added "people on board will have programmes to try to understand what is a conflict and how to deal with a conflict".

"The children are coming from 25 countries of the Mediterranean and Europe, Arabs and Europeans, Christians, Muslims and Jews, and youngsters from countries which still have conflicts", the Cruise Director said.
