[01] UNFICYP - Greek Cypriot - Illegal court

Nicosia, Aug 11 (CNA) -- An illegal court in the Turkish occupied areas will "rule" on Friday over the fate of a Greek Cypriot illegally held by the occupation regime since July 21.

UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) spokeswoman, Sarah Russell told CNA, Greek Cypriot Rogiros Georgiou, who has Canadian citizenship, today "testified" and the "final decision will be made on Friday".

She said an UNFICYP and a Canadian High Commission representative, as well as Georgiou's brother Dafnis were present at the illegal court.

Georgiou, 48, was abducted when he accidentally drove into the Turkish occupied areas last month.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.

The illegal regime unilaterally set up by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in November 1983 is recognised only by Ankara.

    [02] Christofias - Transplant

London, Aug 11 (CNA) -- General Secretary of left-wing AKEL party, Demetris Christofias, today underwent a kidney transplant in the British capital which his doctor said went "extremely well".

Surgeon Naden Hakim who performed the operation at St. Mary's Hospital in London said the whole procedure lasted six hours and both Christofias and his sister Despina Mavridou, who donated the kidney, will remain in the Intensive Care Unit for two days and will then be moved to separate rooms.

Dr. Hakim said "the kidney is working already very well, producing a lot of urine. There were no complications whatever," he added, pointing out that Christofias did not bleed at all and did not require any blood.

Christofias will stay in hospital for a week or ten days while his sister will be discharged in three to four days.

Hakim said Christofias will remain in London for another four weeks and be treated as an outpatient.

In March, Christofias underwent a successful open heart operation.
