CNA EC/GG/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1305:CYPPRESS:03[03] UNFICYP - Condition of Greek Cypriot - Turkish occupied areasNicosia, Aug 5 (CNA) -- The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) said a Greek Cypriot abducted by the Turkish occupation forces last month, has no signs of ill treatment and that he is in good health.UNFICYP spokeswoman, Sarah Russell told CNA that an UNFICYP doctor examined Rogiros Georgiou yesterday and "found him to be in good health, and that he (doctor) was satisfied with his medical condition." She said the doctor found Georgiou's living conditions "acceptable", adding that the doctor "...could not detect any signs of ill treatment." Georgiou, 48, a Canadian national was abducted by the Turkish occupation forces last month after accidentally entering the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkey since 1974. Georgiou's brother, Dafnis, told CNA after visiting him on Tuesday that his brother was systematically beaten, tortured and on a number of occasions left without food and water. Asked about the headaches Georgiou had told his brother he was suffering from, Russell said she did not have the full medical report. The UNFICYP spokeswoman said the Force "will pass on this information to the ministry" of Foreign Affairs. The Foreign Ministry, in a statement yesterday, said it made representations to UNFICYP over complaints that Georgiou had been tortured by his Turkish captors. Russell said UNFICYP "had offered and said that at any time he (Georgiou) wanted to see an UNFICYP doctor, we would take a doctor," noting the offer has always been there. Asked if Georgiou's doctor will be able to visit him, Russell said UNFICYP spoke to Dafnis Georgiou yesterday and "he said that he will not for the moment seek permission to take the family doctor" to the occupied areas. Rogiros Georgiou is expected to appear before an illegal court in the Turkish occupied areas on August 10. The illegal regime in the Turkish occupied north is recognised only by Ankara.
