[01] Cyprus President - US Congressmen

Nicosia, Jul 27 (CNA) -- Greek American Congressmen today stressed the need to cultivate awareness amongst Americans about the Cyprus problem.

Speaking after a meeting today with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, Congressmen said an effort is being made in the United States to gather all Greek Americans and friends of Cyprus and Greece to promote the issue.

Rhode Island Senator, Leonidas Raptakis, said the delegation gave the President two resolutions adopted by the states of Rhode Island and New Hampshire, condemning the Turkish invasion.

In its declaration, the New Hampshire House of Representatives states that it congratulates the Republic of Cyprus "in recognition of its effort of the past 25 years to arrive at a peaceful and lasting solution for its territory, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions".

Raptakis pledged Greek Americans will continue to influence decision makers in Washington that a just solution must be found, to terminate the Turkish occupation of the island's northern third.

New Hampshire Congressman, William Tsiros, said American voters must be made aware of the situation in Cyprus, expressing the view that the State Department policy on the issue is wrong.

He suggested that more pressure should be exerted on the US Administration to solve the problem.

Tsiros revealed that "Turkey has started giving money to US universities", so that they will teach the Turkish history that Turkey wants.

He said bills are being passed all over the US, forbidding foreign countries from giving money for such purposes.

Connecticut Congressman, Demetrios Yiannaros, said "we are trying to create a bridge of peace to reunite Cyprus", adding that an effort is being made to organise all states "to change the American public opinion, so that Americans understand what exactly has happened here in Cyprus".

Yiannaros noted "unfortunately Americans do not have the knowledge they ought to about what has happened, and we have taken the responsibility for the benefit of both Cyprus and the US, so that Cyprus may be reunited and human rights restored".

Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.
