1330:CYPPRESS:01[01] Australian Parliamentarians - Clerides - KyprianouNicosia, Jul 19 (CNA) -- President of the House of Representatives of Australia, Neil Andrew, expressed optimism here Monday that Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides will endeavour to use whatever opportunities present to solve the Cyprus problem.Andrew who is chairing an Australian Parliamentary delegation which arrived on the island on Saturday, was speaking after a meeting with President of the House of Representatives, Spyros Kyprianou. The Australian parliamentarians were also received by President Clerides. Andrew said the delegation had the opportunity to share with Kyprianou, "Australian's interest in what is happening in Cyprus, to share the things that we have in common and to seek through him, an appropriate solution to the difficulties that Cyprus faces". Andrew said the delegation is "aware how sensitive this week is, in the eyes of all Cypriots", adding "we did discuss with the President the possibility of the UN resolutions providing an opportunity for a further meeting with all cards laid on the table". Tomorrow, July 20th, marks the 25th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the occupation of the island's northern third. "We are optimistic that the President (of the Republic) clearly is seeking a solution and will endeavour to use whatever opportunities present themselves to help bring Cyprus into an appropriately cooperative society", Andrew added. The UN Security Council, in resolution 1250, requests the Secretary- General to invite the leaders of the two sides to negotiations in autumn of 1999. It also calls upon the two leaders to commit themselves to negotiations under no preconditions, all issues on the table, to give full consideration of relevant UN resolutions and treaties and to commit in good faith to continue to negotiate until a settlement is reached. House President Kyprianou said they had an "extensive and detailed discussion about the Cyprus problem". He said the Australian MPs were understanding and expressed the hope that this visit will further develop relations between the two Houses of Representatives. Andrew invited Kyprianou, on behalf of the Australian House of Representatives, to pay an official visit to Australia. The invitation was accepted by the House President.
