CNA EC/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1745:CYPPRESS:02[02] Kranidiotis - Cyprus - StatementNicosia, Jul 16 (CNA) -- Greek Alternate Foreign Minister, Yiannos Kranidiotis said Greece's positions on Cyprus remain unchanged and assured his country will continue to guarantee the survival of Hellenism in Cyprus. In a statement marking 25 years since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the occupation of the island's northern third, Kranidiotis said that "for a quarter of a century, the Cyprus tragedy remains a dark page in current world history and civilisation." He said that the Turkish invaders in Cyprus, "using brutal violence carried out one of the most abhorrent operations of ethnic cleansing." This operation, he said, resulted with the displacement of one third of the Greek Cypriot population and more than 1600 people missing. More than 200.000 Greek Cypriots were uprooted from their homes during the July 20th Turkish invasion. Kranidiotis said that Turkey implements a systematic plan to alter the demographic structure of the island in the occupied north by implanting there Turkish settlers. According to Turkish Cypriot press reports there are now less than 60.000 Turkish Cypriots in the occupied areas. Turkey has installed more than 80.000 Turkish colonist settlers in the occupied areas, in addition to 35.000 heavily Turkish soldiers. The Greek Alternate Foreign Minister denounced the occupation regime for its "continued oppression and gradual eviction of the enclaved", and attacked it for the pillage of the cultural heritage of the Cypriot people. Less than 500 Greek Cypriots remain in the occupied areas since the invasion. Noting the Greek positions on Cyprus "remain unchanged", Kranidiotis described "today's illegal situation...as unacceptable." "However time it takes, the struggle to restore legality will continue", Kranidiotis said, assuring that the struggle of Cyprus belongs to Hellenism. "Greece remains a guarantor of the security and survival of the Hellenism of Cyprus, steadfastly promoting the implementation of the joint defence pact between Cyprus and Greece and Cyprus accession to the European Union", Kranidiotis said. The Greek alternate minister also condemned the provocative celebrations by Turkish Cypriots in the occupied areas, stressing that they do not contribute in efforts for peace on the island. CNA AA/EC/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY2010:CYPPRESS:05[05] Russian Communist Party - CyprusNicosia, Jul 16 (CNA) -- The Communist Party of the Russian Federation believes that a fair solution to the Cyprus problem can be achieved only if its territorial integrity is guaranteed. This position is outlined in a statement by the presidency of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation marking 25 years since the July 1974 military coup in Cyprus engineered by the Greek military junta and the Turkish invasion and occupation that followed. The party notes that the tragic events 25 years ago led Greek and Turkish Cypriots to many disasters and to the division of the country with thousands of Cypriots remaining refugees. The Communist Party criticises the US and NATO for "conspiring" against Cyprus, an independent and active member of the Non-Aligned Movement, and adds that "these same forces prevent peace in Cyprus". The Communist Party stresses that the main obstacle remains the uncurbed stance of the Turkish Cypriot leadership which has the backing of Ankara and its NATO allies. "We believe that a just solution to the Cyprus problem can only be reached if its territorial integrity is achieved and the legitimate rights of all Cypriot citizens are secured," the statement says. The Communist Party further expresses its solidarity to the people of Cyprus for their struggle for reunification, democracy and peace. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory, in violation of repeated UN Security Council resolutions calling for the withdrawal of the occupation troops.
