CNA GG/MCH/MM/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1605:CYPPRESS:02[02] Britain - MPs - Early Day motionsLondon, Jul 14 (CNA) -- British MPs will table here Wednesday two early day motions on Cyprus calling for an end to the division of the island. The motions were approved last night by around 25 Labour and Conservative MPs during a gathering on Cyprus at the House of Commons. The first early day motion notes that the House "believes that after 25 years the Cyprus problem has gone unresolved for too long." Welcoming the intention of the UN Secretary-General to invite both sides to a fresh round of negotiations on the basis of existing UN resolutions, the motion "urges all concerned to seize this best opportunity for 25 years to end the enforced division of Cyprus and its people." Calling for a prosperous future for all Cypriots within the European Union, the motion "endorses the statement of the G8 countries that the resolution of the Cyprus problem would have a positive impact on peace and stability in the region." In the second motion, the MPs call on the House to congratulate "the friends of Cyprus for their work since 1974 in bringing together representatives of Greek and Cypriot civil society." It commends the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for their continued support of students from both communities through their scholarship programme. It also supports "all initiatives to facilitate such intercommunal contacts and would wish to see extended to all young and Greek and Turkish Cypriots born after 1974 the opportunity to meet either in Cyprus or in the UK to develop the mutual respect and understanding which must underpin a just and lasting settlement in Cyprus." Last night's gathering was organised by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the National Federation of Cypriots. Labour MP Eddie O'Hara said that together with his colleague, Tom Cox they will visit the Turkish occupied Karpass peninsula next month to ascertain the living conditions of the enclaved. Less than 500 Greek Cypriots remain in the Turkish occupied north of the island since Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory in July 1974.
