    [01] Drugs - Arrests

Nicosia, Jun 29 (CNA) -- Two men were arrested yesterday after Police seized a haul of 33 kilos of hashish oil and two kilos of marihuana at Ormidia village within the British Bases area.

Police Headquarters Spokesman Stelios Neofitou told CNA that two persons were arrested. They are Stelios Katti, a 58-year-old Cypriot from Ormidia, and a Lebanese Cypriot, whose name has not been revealed by Police.

He said 33 kilos of hashish oil worth two million Cyprus pounds on the street market and a further two kilos of marihuana were seized.

Press reports said the drugs were found in the Cypriot man's warehouse on the Ormidia-Xilofagou road.

The suspects were expected to appear today before court for a remand order.

"It is the biggest quantity of hashish oil ever found in Cyprus", Neofytou said.

    [02] Kurds - Demonstration - Cyprus

Nicosia, Jun 29 (CNA) -- More than 100 Kurds living in Cyprus staged a demonstration today outside the US Embassy in Nicosia, and hurled stones at the building.

The demonstration began in Eleftheria Square, in central Nicosia, from where the Kurds marched to the embassy, awaiting the verdict against their leader, Abdullah Ocalan.

On hearing that the Kurdish chief was sentenced to hang, the demonstrators were flooded with anger.

They threw stones at the embassy and chanted "USA terrorist" and "Turkish fascists".

Some demonstrators shouted that "blood would flow" now that their leader was sentenced to death.

The US Embassy is being heavily guarded by the Cyprus Police and special forces men arrived at the scene equipped with anti-riot gear.

    1400:CYPPRESS:03 Cyprus - Ocalan - Death sentence

Nicosia, Jun 29 (CNA) -- The government expressed today its opposition to capital punishment but refrained from commenting on the death sentence handed down on Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan.

Invited to comment on the verdict against Ocalan passed earlier today by a Turkish court, Government Spokesman Costas Serezis said "the Cyprus Republic has abolished the death sentence as it is against it."

Serezis pointed out that Cyprus abolished capital punishment to align itself with European Union laws.
