    [01] President Clerides - Hercus

Nicosia, Jun 22 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General's resident representative Ann Hercus met today with President Glafcos Clerides, in the framework of UN- led "shuttle talks" aimed at getting the two sides in Cyprus to the negotiating table.

Hercus refrained from making any statements after the meeting but said she will meet Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, early next week.

The UN Secretary General had suggested in separate meetings with President Clerides and Rauf Denktash in New York, in September 1998 the process of "shuttle talks" with a view of reducing tension and promoting progress towards a just and lasting settlement.

The process began on October 16, 1998.

    [02] Cyprus Airways - Pilots - Strike

Nicosia, Jun 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus Airways fleet remains grounded at Larnaca airport as the 24-hour strike of its pilots is under way since midnight Monday.

Over 3.000 passengers will be affected by the strike, according to a Cyprus Airways spokesman, who said however that alternative arrangements have been made so that all passengers "can reach their destination".

PASIPY, the pilots' trade union, says the strike has been inevitable as the company has reneged on an agreement on the way captain vacancies in Eurocypria, the charter subsidiary of Cyprus Airways, should be filled.

On its part, the company says collective agreements signed with unions clearly state that Eurocypria pilots have priority while a Cyprus Airways spokesman described the action as "illegal".

PASIPY members were this morning picketing at Larnaca airport. The company's special arrangements to deal with the strike appear to have been efficient as only minor problems are being witnessed at Larnaca airport.

The government yesterday called on the pilots to suspend the strike as it would be disastrous for the company, its employees and the island's economy.

    [04] Greek Ambassador - G8

Nicosia, Jun 22 (CNA) -- Greek Ambassador to Cyprus, Kyriakos Rodousakis said the key for a resumption of the peace process lies with the UN.

Roudousakis was received today by President Glafcos Clerides and they discussed the statement issued by the seven most industrialised countries plus Russia (G8) on Cyprus, which urges the UN Secretary-General to invite the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus for talks this Autumn.

Citing the Greek government's view that the G8 statement is a "positive step", Rodousakis added the "key to the whole procedure on Cyprus is in the hands of the UN."

He added that what is expected now is a move on the part of the Secretary-General and the next two resolutions of the UN Security Council on Cyprus.

"It seems that the Secretary-General is contemplating his next steps" on the Cyprus problem, Rodousakis added.

The Greek diplomat expressed the hope that previous resolutions on Cyprus, especially the resolutions of December 1998, will be reconfirmed.

Security Council resolution 1217 called on all states and the parties concerned to refrain from any action which might prejudice the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the country.

The second resolution, 1218 requests the Secretary-General to "work intensively" with the two sides on a "staged process aimed at limiting and then substantially reducing the level of troops and armaments on Cyprus", as well as other measures for the reduction of tensions.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.
