[01] Cyprus - US - Measures against Yugoslavia

Nicosia, May 13 (CNA) -- The US has welcomed a decision by the Cyprus government to align itself as far as possible with additional measures the European Union intends to implement against Yugoslavia.

Asked yesterday if Cyprus is violating the oil embargo as a non EU member, US State Department spokesman James Rubin said "I would have to check that, but we do welcome the decision of Cyprus to join the consensus of countries in Europe who are not allowing that to happen."

Rubin said the US has "also approached several other countries to adhere voluntarily to the embargo."

Announcing the Cyprus government decision on Wednesday, its spokesman Costas Serezis explained that the issues under the competency of the cabinet would be examined and look into others which might require legislation.

The EU measures include a ban on visits by some 300 Yugoslav politicians to states aligning themselves with the decision, a freeze on funds held by Yugoslav and Serbian officials and a ban on providing private sector export finance to Yugoslavia.
