    [01] Workers' Day

Nicosia, May 1 (CNA) -- Trade Unions are celebrating today Workers' Day with the organisation of gatherings and marches while political parties sent messages of support to the working class, pointing out, however, the importance of harmonisation with the acquis communautaire.

In a message, Labour Minister, Andreas Moushioutas says the rapid improvement of the standard of living of Cypriots during the last decades was accompanied by an increasing reorganisation of the economy, which has unavoidably created a few problems for certain groups of people.

He stresses, however, his Ministry's intention to stand by the working people and the trade unionists in the framework of a genuine cooperation for common profit.

Ruling right-wing Democratic Rally (DISI) stresses that economic development and progress should be followed by harmonisation with the European Union labour policies.

Leading opposition left-wing AKEL blames the government of implementing an unpopular economic policy promoting the interests of employers and stresses the need to defend working class vested interests.

Centre-right Democratic Party (DIKO) and Socialist EDEK pledge their support to the working class, while the Free Democrats stress the need for cooperation of all social partners for economic development in view of the critical period until Cyprus' accession to the EU.
