    [03] Fire - Factory - Under control - Damage

Nicosia, Apr 25 (CNA) -- A fire at a dairy factory outside the capital Nicosia Sunday morning was under control after causing 10 million CYP (around 20 million US dollars) worth of damage.

Police told CNA that a security guard was the sole employee at the "Pittas" dairy factory in the industrial area of Latsia, a Nicosia suburb, when the fire broke out around 08.30 am (05.30 GMT) after a loud explosion was heard.

The factory, which produced one fourth of the island's milk products, was also exporting its products to a number of countries.

Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister, Nicos Rolandis, who visited the scene, told reporters that measures will be taken to avoid repercussions on the island's milk industry.

A thick cloud billowed over the area as soon as the fire broke out and Police had warned nearby residents to remain indoors because of possible toxic fumes.

So far the cause of the fire remains unknown.
