[01] Cyprus Foreign Minister - Kosovo

Nicosia, Mar 26 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides expressed the Cyprus government's concern over the bombardment of Yugoslavia.

In statements yesterday, Kasoulides said that Cyprus firmly supports the protection of "human rights, the political identity and autonomy" of the region of Kosovo, as part of new Yugoslavia.

He said the Cyprus government expects the UN Security Council to play a more active role.

Invited to comment on statements made by US President, Bill Clinton that the Kosovo crisis might worsen Greco-Turkish relations, Kasoulides said he does not believe the relations between the two countries will be affected because of the Kosovo crisis.

"What the US should do", he said, is to make sure Greece and Turkey do not become involved in the Kosovo crisis.

To a question if the Cyprus issue will be affected by the Kosovo crisis, Kasoulides said he does not associate the two issues because they are different.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.
