[01] Cyprus Police - Greek Embassy - Measures

Nicosia, Feb 16 (CNA) -- Cypriot police have taken additional security measures around the Greek embassy in Nicosia after reports that Kurdish protesters had stormed Greek embassies in various countries.

Since late on Monday, Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan is in the hands of Kenyan authorities.

The Greek government announced that it provided place (at the Greek embassy in Nairobi) for Ocalan to stay in kenya, where he went after efforts to find refuge.

It said Ocalan decided to negotiate with kenyan authorities, who took charge of him late on Monday.

Cyprus Police senior spokesman Glafcos Xenos told CNA this morning that police tightened security around the Greek embassy in downtown Nicosia. He did not elaborate.

Xenos said the duration of the additional measures would depend on developments in the Ocalan case.

During Ocalan's stay in Italy, Kurdish people living temporarily in Cyprus staged a series of demonstrations outside the US and French embassies in Nicosia.

    [02] Cyprus - Ocalan

Nicosia, Feb 16 (CNA) -- The government of Cyprus has expressed solidarity with Greece, regarding the seizure by Kurds of Greek diplomatic missions in Europe, after the news about Kurdish guerilla leader, Abdullah Ocalan.

Government Spokesman, Christos Stylianides, said that "the Cyprus government is in solidarity with Greece" and "believes that such actions do not serve any struggle".

He said that Cyprus hopes that the seizures "will end the soonest possible, without any further problems".

Referring to the arrest of Ocalan, the Government Spokesman said that "it is a sad incident" and expressed the conviction that "such incidents should be faced in the context of international law and respect of human rights".
