[01] Socialist Party - Central Committee

Nicosia, Jan 2 (CNA) -- The Central Committee of the Socialist EDEK party started a crucial meeting here today to consider a proposal by the party's Political Bureau to leave the government.

The Bureau's proposal, widely expected to be approved, came after President Glafcos Clerides announced his decision not to deploy the Russian defence missile system S300 in Cyprus.

Party leader Vasos Lyssarides described the decision as wrong and warned of dire consequences for Cyprus and Hellenism as a whole.

EDEK participates in Clerides' government with two ministers, Defence and Education, since the President, re-elected in February last year for a second five-year term in office, formed his government earlier this year.
