CNA MCH/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1810:CYPPRESS:02[02] National Council - S300Nicosia, Dec 29 (CNA) -- The National Council, top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus problem, began a crucial meeting to decide on the future of the deployment of Russian defensive system S300.President Glafcos Clerides, who is presiding over the meeting, arrived here earlier after a meeting in Athens with Greek Prime Minister, Costas Simitis, on the S300 issue. Neither Clerides nor Simitis made any statements after the meeting. A written statement issued by the Greek government after the meeting merely said the two men exchanged views on the positions of the Cypriot parties in regards of the S300. Ruling right-wing Democratic Rally (DISI) is represented by party leader Nikos Anastasiades and Panayiotis Demetriou, leading opposition left- wing AKEL, by Andreas Christou and Venizelos Zanettou, and centre-right Democratic Party (DIKO) by Spyros Kyprianou and Nikos Cleanthous. Socialist EDEK is represented by Vassos Lyssarides and Yiannakis Omirou, the United Democrats by George Vassiliou and Michalis Papapetrou and the New Horizons by Nikos Koutsou and Christos Clerides. The party for Eurodemocratic Renewal is also taking part in the meeting for the first time, represented by Alexis Galanos and Antonis Paschalides. Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, Attorney General, Alecos Markides, Government Spokesman, Christos Stylianides and Undersecretary to the President, Pantelis Kouros, are also taking part in the meeting. CNA GG/RM/MCH/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY2005:CYPPRESS:03[03] Russia - Cyprus - S-300Nicosia, Dec 29 (CNA) -- Russia's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Vladimir Rakhmanin expressed the hope Cyprus will respect its contract concerning Russian defensive system S-300, pointing out that he sees no danger to regional security as a result from this purchase.In an interview to Reuters, Rakhmanin stressed that Russia hopes Cyprus will respect its contract with Moscow to buy the missiles. "Our position is that this is a purely commercial contract," he said and added: "We do not believe that this contract is the origin of tensions in Cyprus". Rakhmanin said that "Russia has moved forward some ideas on how to reduce tensions on the island" and stressed that "the main proposal is the demilitarisation of Cyprus and I believe these ideas are still on the table". Meanwhile the National Council (top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus problem) in Nicosia is discussing this evening the future of the S-300, following a meeting in Athens between President Glafcos Clerides and Greek Prime Minister, Costas Simitis. CNA RM/MCH/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY2050:CYPPRESS:04[04] Clerides - S300 (urgent)Nicosia, Dec 29 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides announced tonight his decision for the non deployment of the Russian-made S-300 surface-to-air missiles in Cyprus.He said in a two-page written statement after a three-hour session of the island's National Council that he would negotiate with the Russian government the possible deployment of the missiles in Greece's southern island of Crete. The National Council, made up of political party leaders, failed to take a unanimous decision on the S300 issue. The anti-aircraft missiles were ordered by the Cyprus government in January 1997.
