    [01] Turkish settler - Fraud

Nicosia, Dec 21 (CNA) -- A so-called minister of the illegal regime in the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus is reported to be the mastermind of a mob conning international companies by convincing them to invest in Turkey through the puppet state, recognised only by Ankara.

According to the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC), Kenan Akin, a settler from mainland Turkey, who is the "agriculture and forests minister" of the occupation regime, and Serdar Denktash, son of the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, are involved in the fraud.

The gang, mainly aiming at companies that left Hong Kong after the former British colony was integrated to China, promises investors the right to hold Turkish passports if they first issue a passport from the illegal regime unilaterally set up in the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkey since 1974.

Through this fraud the illegal regime, set up in 1983, is trying to gain international recognition.

Numerous UN resolutions call on all states not to recognise or facilitate the secessionist entity in any way.

The CyBC said the fraud was made known after a consultation services company based in Hong Kong, with offices in Canada, charged Akin for conning its clients with written guarantees that they would obtain a Turkish passport.

The company said Akin managed to obtain from three of its clients 10 thousand dollars as an advance, with assurances that they would be given immediate permission for permanent residence in the occupied areas and a Turkish passport, within a month.

The authorities of the Cyprus Republic have obtained an international arrest warrant against Akin after they established that he was one of two mainland Turks who murdered a young Greek Cypriot demonstrator on August 14, 1996.

Solomos Solomou, 26, was shot by Akin and Erdal Emanet, chief of the illegal special forces in the occupied areas, during an anti-occupation demonstration in the eastern town of Dherynia after the funeral of another Greek Cypriot murdered by Turks during a demonstration held three days earlier.

Tassos Issak, 24, was brutally beaten to death during a demonstration protesting the illegal Turkish occupation of part of Cyprus.

    [02] Arabs - Demonstration - US embassy

Nicosia, Dec 21 (CNA) -- The Arab community living in Cyprus protested here today against the US and British air attacks on Iraq.

The demonstrators gathered outside the US embassy in Nicosia holding pickets, which read "Clinton murderer of children", "USA - Britain - Murderers" and shouting "Down with Clinton".

Earlier they handed over a letter to the nearby Russian embassy, thanking Russia for its stance on the US-British air attacks on Iraq.

They marched to the US embassy, where the Cyprus police took strict security measures.

Representatives of the Arabs said that the demonstration was held for the support of Iraq and against Bill Clinton "who transferred his personal problems in the war with Iraq".

They stressed that "it's time to lift sanctions against Iraq" and added that "Bill Clinton should stop harassing Baghdad".

The protesters were holding Lebanese, Syrian, and Palestinian flags. Some of the demonstrators come from Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Egypt, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

    [03] Israeli Spies - Court

Larnaca, Dec 21 (CNA) -- Two Israelis facing charges for espionage against the Cyprus Republic pleaded not guilty before the Assize Court, which met here today.

Their trial has been set for January 20, 1999. Asked whether they admitted three counts concerning spying and conspiracy to commit a crime, Igal Damary, 49, and Udi Hargov, 37, both Mossad agents, replied negatively.

The two were arrested on November 9 in the southern coastal village of Zygi after Police found sophisticated listening devices and radio scanners at their sea-side apartment, tuned into police radio frequencies.

Meanwhile a request by Israeli consul Michel Haren for the release of the two suspects on bail and stay at the Israeli embassy in Nicosia was denied by the Court.

There are 30 witnesses for the prosecution, 20 of whom are policemen, two work for the Central Intelligence Department, two are National Guard (army) officials, two are civil servants and four other people.
