CNA MA/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1605:CYPPRESS:02[02] Cyprus - IsraelisNicosia, Nov 19 (CNA) -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is trying to resolve the problem that has arisen after two Israelis were detained by the Cyprus police on suspicion of spying against the National Guard, Moshe Fogel, Director of the Government Press Office, told CNA today.The Israeli official refrained from commenting on press reports about a meeting on Wednesday between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Cyprus' Ambassador to Israel Euripides Evriviades. However, well informed sources told CNA that the Israeli Premier has admitted the two detainees are Mossad agents and explained their mission to the Cypriot ambassador. Asked if Netanyahu had expressed regret that his words were misunderstood in Cyprus and in the local press, Fogel said "the only thing I can tell you is that the Prime Minister said he would try to resolve the problem." Last week local media slammed Netanyahu's statement that he would bring back the two Israeli citizens. Invited to outline the kind of resolution to the problem the Israeli Premier would like to see, he replied "the resolution of the problem would have to be dealt with with the authorities in Cyprus and that is it." He also noted that there is an ongoing contact but refused to comment any further on the matter. Two Israelis, Udi Hargov and Igal Damary, arrested on November 7 after police raided their apartment and found hi-tech equipment tuned into the police radio frequency. The two, who will appear again before Larnaca District Court Friday morning, were operating in a sensitive military area at a time of increased military activity in the vicinity. Meanwhile, well informed sources have confirmed to CNA that Netanyahu explained yesterday to the Cypriot Ambassador "the purpose of the operation and told him the two Israelis were Mossad agents." The Premier also said the two were not acting against Cyprus or on behalf of Turkey, they added. The same sources told CNA that Netanyahu told Evriviades he was sorry his words to the press last week were misunderstood in Cyprus and in the press. CNA MM/MA/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1815:CYPPRESS:03[03] Defence Minister - National SecurityNicosia, Nov 19 (CNA) -- Defence Minister, Yiannakis Omirou, today stressed the importance of national security pointing out that there is always room improvement.Invited to comment on press reports regarding the creation of a counter-espionage unit, Omirou said mechanisms to safeguard state security do exist, they are being improved and if needed new ones will be created. Meanwhile, Omirou declined to comment on reports according to which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has admitted the two Israelis arrested here for espionage were Mossad agents. Pointing out that interrogations are still going on regarding the case, Omirou said any intervention at this stage would be wrong. The Defence Minister was also asked to comment on the issue of US arms used by the Turkish armed forces to occupy the northern part of Cyprus and to sustain the occupation regime. Omirou also expressed the readiness of the Cypriot government to provide the US with any information it might need, pointing out that: "Everybody knows that the Turkish-occupation in Cyprus is maintained, almost entirely, by American arms. Washington has launched an investigation into the arms Turkey illegally maintains in the northern part of Cyprus, under its occupation since the 1974, to establish whether Ankara is violating a relevant US law approved by the Congress in 1988. CNA SD/MCH/MA/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1845:CYPPRESS:04[04] House of Representatives - Illegal entityNicosia, Nov 19 (CNA) -- The House of Representatives denounced at its weekly plenary session today the illegal and unilateral declaration of a so- called independent entity in the Turkish-occupied northern part of the island 15 years ago.In a petition the House called for the withdrawal of the illegal declaration, on November 15 1983, and for the freedom and re-unification of Cyprus, as well as the restoration of the legitimate rights of its people. It points out that efforts aiming at a Cyprus settlement should be directed towards Turkey, so that Ankara would feel the need for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem. The illegal entity 1983 is recognised by no other country but Turkey, whose troops still remain on the island since they invaded Cyprus in 1974. Repeated UN resolutions have called for the withdrawal of Turkish troops from the island and for the recognition of no other state on the island but that of the Cyprus Republic. CNA SD/MCH/MA/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1900:CYPPRESS:05[05] Mousiouttas - Convention on Rights of the ChildNicosia, Nov 19 (CNA) -- For 24 years the children of Cyprus have been deprived of their fundamental right to security, free movement and settlement in their own country, Labour Minister, Andreas Mousiouttas, underlined today.In a message on the occasion of the signing of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, Mousiouttas stressed that children living in the Turkish-occupied part of the island are deprived of their fundamental rights to freedom, family, education and security. Some 30 Greek Cypriot children live enclaved in the areas of the Republic occupied by Turkish troops since 1974. Their living conditions have been described in a number of UN reports as inhumane. No secondary schools operate in the occupied areas and children wishing to further their education have to come to the government- controlled areas and be deprived of their families. Girls up to the age of 18 can visit their parents during Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays, and boys up to the age of 16. CNA MCH/MA/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1920:CYPPRESS:06[06] Kasoulides - Return from AlgeriaLarnaca, Nov 19 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, who returned here today from Algeria, expressed satisfaction with his meetings with the political leadership of the country.Kasoulides met his Algerian counterpart and was received by the President, Prime Minister and the Speakers of the two Houses of the country. He said the aim of the visit was to express the Cyprus government's support to Algeria's efforts "towards democratisation and for the creation of conditions of security and prosperity for the people of the country." The Foreign Minister also pointed out that Algeria presides over the Cyprus contact group of the Non-Aligned Movement and said that Algiers had to be briefed on recent developments regarding the Cyprus problem.
