    [01] Cyprus - Spain - Lorca - Events

Nicosia, Nov 11 (CNA) -- Nicosia Municipality is organising a series of cultural events which will concentrate on Spain.

Entitled "Cyprus - Spain - 100 years of Lorca", the events will give special emphasis on the great Spanish poet, Federico Garcia Lorca as this year marks the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Nicosia Mayor, Lellos Demetriades, told the press the events are taking place within the framework of Cyprus' European perspective. Each year, the municipality chooses one country, last year France and this year Spain.

The Cyprus - Spain week will take place between November 16-21 and will include theatre, music, dance, arts, cinema, lectures and a symposium which will present Spain's rich culture.

[02] Greek Alternate Foreign Minister - Cyprus - EU

Nicosia, Nov 11 (CNA) -- Greek Alternate Foreign Minister George Papandreou warned that if the European Union does not accept Cyprus as a member because of the Cyprus problem, the Greek Parliament would not ratify the accession of the other five candidate countries that have also begun accession talks.

Talking to Cyprus state radio (CyBC) today, Papandreou pointed out that obstacles placed by some EU members do not facilitate efforts for a settlement here.

One day prior to the opening of substantive negotiations yesterday, France, Germany and the Netherlands submitted a statement, also backed by Italy, describing a political solution as urgent in order to solve problems.

"The course of the process of negotiations will give rise to a series of problems which originate from the specific situation in Cyprus," they supported.

Papandreou said the start of substantive negotiations "proves that Cyprus is moving forward", but pointed out that "this does not mean we will not have to face similar obstacles in the future."

"If the accession negotiations prove that Cyprus is ready for membership and the only reason they do not accept her is because the Cyprus problem is not settled, then it is certain that the Greek Parliament would not be able to ratify the accession of the other countries because this would be unfair and unacceptable," he added.

The Greek official underlined that his country "has made it clear to all that this negotiating tactic does not facilitate efforts for a settlement to the Cyprus issue."

He also said that the momentum created by Cyprus' EU accession course should not be lost as it backs efforts towards a solution.

Asked if he believes the statement was issued in a bid to press Greece to accept EU funding to Turkey, Papandreou said "it is very possible, even though they have not put it forward in this sense."
