    [03] G/C & T/C - Seminar

Brussels, Oct 30 (CNA) -- A two-day seminar entitled "Cyprus after a solution - a scientific workshop" began today in Brussels with the participation of Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

The seminar is organised by the Foundation for Socio-Political Studies and the German foundation "Friedrich Eberhardt."

The aim of the two-day meeting is to allow people from both communities of the divided island to express their views on issues such as the environment, public health, culture and labour.

Participants were welcomed by German Euro MP, Mechtild Rothe, Cyprus Chief Negotiator in the accession talks, George Vassiliou and the president of the Foundation for Socio-Political Studies, Renos Prentzas.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.

It applied for EU membership in 1990, and is scheduled to start substantive accession negotiations on November 10.
