1055:CYPPRESS:01[01] International Conference - Privatisation - EU - CyprusNicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) -- An international conference and seminar which will address the social and economic challenges ahead as Cyprus moves closer to economic union with Europe, will be held between October 19-21 in Nicosia.Entitled "Privatisation and Beyond: The European Route to Economic Regulation", it is organised by the European Institute of Cyprus and the British Council. "The aim of the conference is to present and debate the European experience of privatisation and subsequent economic regulation", said here Friday a joint statement by the organisers. It will focus on the UK's experience of utility privatisation and liberalisation, as well as other European experiences, with opinions from experts at the heart of Europe and a case study of the Portuguese experience. The opening session on October 19 at the Central Bank auditorium, will be open to the public and will include presentations on the rationale for changes as well as the British Trade Union experience. Cyprus Finance Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou will be the opening speaker. An interactive specialist two-day seminar for invited parties will follow with presentations from leading industry, regulatory, legal practitioner and research commentators from Europe. Cyprus applied for EU membership in 1990. It signed an association agreement in 1972 and a customs union protocol in 1987. CNA EC/GP/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1255:CYPPRESS:02[02] Cyprus - UN-sponsored shuttle talksNicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) -- UN Resident Representative, Dame Ann Hercus, launched her shuttle diplomacy here Friday with a first meeting with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides.Hercus will hold her first meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash on Wednesday (Oct. 21) and a second meeting with President Clerides the following day. In a brief statement after her 50-minute meeting at the Presidential Palace, the UN envoy said "I have had my first meeting with Mr. Clerides, I meet with Mr Denktash next week, on Wednesday, and a subsequent meeting with Mr. Clerides next Thursday". Dame Ann was accompanied by UN Senior Advisor, Peter Schmitz. Also present was Under Secretary to the President, Pantelis Kouros. Her meeting today launched the start of shuttle talks aimed at lifting the deadlock on the protracted Cyprus problem. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced last month, after meeting separately Clerides and Denktash in New York, that Hercus would develop a "process for on-island contacts with both parties with the goal of reducing tensions and promoting progress towards a just and lasting settlement". Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.
