[01] Finnish Foreign Minister - Demarcation Line

Nicosia, Oct 13 (CNA) -- Finnish Foreign Minister Tarja Halonen has expressed hope that Nicosia will cease to be a divided capital.

Speaking during a visit to the demarcation line, dividing the city, she noted that people in Europe "have faced the walls in different cities, like in Berlin" and have always hoped that in the future these would not exist.

"That is why we sign the book with a text hoping to see the best for the future in an undivided city," she told reporters after she had signed the visitors' book.

Earlier today, she had a 30-minute meeting with Nicosia Mayor Lellos Demetriades at the Town Hall.

She also met with UN chief of mission, Dame Ann Hercus. Halonen leaves later today.
