    [01] National Council meets

Nicosia, Sep 7 (CNA) -- The National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus question, began a meeting this morning, to discuss the latest developments in the Cyprus problem.

The meeting comes a week after Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, put forward a proposal for a confederation in Cyprus with "two sovereign and equal states" as the solution to the problem and two weeks before the President flies to New York to address the UN General Assembly.

President Glafcos Clerides is expected to brief party leaders on his recent contacts in South Africa, including a meeting with the UN Secretary- General, where he attended the Non-Aligned Movement Summit in Durban.

Participating in the meeting, chaired by the President, are leaders and representative of the political parties in Parliament, the right-wing Democratic Rally, the left-wing AKEL, the centre-right Democratic Party, Socialist Party EDEK, and the United Democrats.

The New Horizons party, which is not represented in Parliament, is also taking part in today's meeting.

Also participating are Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides, Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides, and Undersecretary to the President Pantelis Kouros.

    [03] Deputies - Russian Duma

Nicosia, Sep 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus, as a sovereign state, has the right to decide about the means it will use to boost its defence, Guennadi Seleznev, President of the Russian Duma has said.

Speaking to Cypriot parliamentarians, in Moscow to attend the 100th meeting of the Interparliamentary Union, Seleznev also referred to the close ties between Russia and Cyprus and said that all political parties in the Duma back the Cyprus cause.

Head of the Cypriot delegation, leader of the Democratic Rally party, Nicos Anastasiades, expressed the gratitude of the people of Cyprus for the consistent support Russia displays for the struggle of Cyprus for a just and viable solution of the protracted Cyprus question.

This support, he pointed out, was reflected in the clear position Russia adopted in response to the unacceptable proposal of the Turkish Cypriot side for a confederation in Cyprus with "two sovereign and equal states".

Moscow described the proposal as unproductive and said it contradicted many UN resolutions. The government of Cyprus rejected the proposal, noting it was "unacceptable and absurd" as well contrary to UN decisions on Cyprus and two high level agreements aiming at a federation which the Turkish Cypriot side has signed.

Present at Sunday's meeting in the Russian capital were the Republic's Ambassador Platon Kyriakides, and deputies Andreas Filippou, Doros Theodorou, Stathis Kittis and Androulla Vassiliou.
