[01] Cyprus - Omagh bomb attack

Nicosia, Aug 17 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government and the House of Representatives today strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Omagh, and expressed the hope that the Northern Ireland peace process will not be impeded.

In telegrams to Irish and British officials, House of Representatives President, Spyros Kyprianou and Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, say they hope that the perpetrators will be brought before justice.

In his messages to British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Irish President, Mary McAleese, the House President says "we wholeheartedly condemn this deplorable act of violence".

He adds that Cyprus "joins the international community in expressing our earnest hope that the perpetrators are brought to justice and that such hideous crimes will never be repeated."

Kasoulides unequivocally condemned "this sinister act of violence", in messages to his British and Irish counterparts, Robin Cook and David Andrews, respectively.

"I wish to express my fervent hope that the peace process in Northern Ireland will not be hindered by this tragic development and that the perpetrators of this deplorable crime are brought to justice," he adds.

Both the House President and the Foreign Minister expressed their sincere condolences to the relatives of the 28 people who lost their lives in Saturday's bomb attack.
