[01] Famagusta municipality protests theft of statues

Nicosia, Jul 10 (CNA) -- The Municipality of Famagusta has strongly protested the destruction of Cyprus' cultural heritage in the Turkish- occupied areas of the island and called on the UN Security Council members and the European Union to take action.

"You have to take immediate action and you should no longer tolerate Turkish barbarity," the municipality of this Turkish-occupied eastern coastal town ask the ambassadors of the big five and the EU, based in Nicosia, in a telegram sent today.

The municipality is protesting the theft of two priceless marble and granite statues from the ancient city of Salamis, near Famagusta.

The theft was reported by the Turkish Cypriot press yesterday, but today "Kibris" newspaper wrote that the two statues, each weighing a ton, were found.

The paper said they have not been damaged, but noted that the illegal police in the Turkish-occupied areas have refused to say where they were found.

Quoting press reports, "Kibris" says the two statues were buried in the sand not very far from Salamis, one of Cyprus' most important kingdoms founded by Teucer, a hero of the Trojan War, between 1194-1184 BC.

The newspaper questions whether ancient sites and museums in the Turkish-occupied areas are well guarded, noting that only 30 persons work for their protection. It notes that Salamis is not guarded at night.

"Illegal art smuggling in the Turkish-occupied areas began with the 1974 Turkish invasion and is continuing until today," the Famagusta municipality says.

It is estimated that more than 500 churches in the Turkish-occupied areas have been destroyed and priceless artefacts, including Byzantine icons and mosaics, were smuggled abroad and sold on the international black market.
