[01] Authorities examine case of illegal immigrants

Limassol, Jun 29 (CNA) -- Ten people, believed to be illegal immigrants, are in hospital and another 96 in a local hotel after their stranded boat was towed to Limassol port, a police spokesman said here today.

The Syrian-flagged boat was located at around midnight by a Russian vessel which, having informed the Cypriot authorities, towed the boat to the port in the early hours of today.

Most people are of Arab nationality, the spokesman said, but at this stage no further information was available.

There are women and children among the stranded persons, he added.

[02] Vassiliou re-elected to party presidency

Nicosia, Jun 29 (CNA) -- George Vassiliou was re-elected yesterday unopposed to the post of president of the United Democrats.

Sunday's first regular party conference created a post for deputy president, which went to Michalis Papapetrou. He was elected unopposed too.

George Christofides is the party's first vice-president and Panicos Papageorghiou was elected second vice-president.

Costas Themistocleous retains his post of General Secretary. A statement issued at the close of the one-day meeting said the future of Cyprus lies in the reunification of the country and stresses that the prospect of accession to the European Union reflects the interests of all the people of Cyprus.

"The United Democrats are participating in the government to work for the good of the people and the country and promote a consistent policy on the Cyprus question," the statement added.

Addressing the party conference, Vassiliou said the only way to solve the problem is through peaceful negotiations under UN aegis.

He backed the demilitarisation of Cyprus and warned that even the slightest spark could ignite a conflict because tension is running high.

The United Democrats participate in the Clerides government with Costas Themistocleous, who holds the portfolio of the Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment.

George Vassiliou, who served as President of the Republic from 1988 to 1993, heads Cyprus' team, who negotiate accession to the European Union.

The United Democrats are represented in the House of Representatives with two deputies, namely George Vassiliou and his wife Androula Vassiliou.

[03] Austrian FM to visit Cyprus

Nicosia, Jun 29 (CNA) -- Austrian Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wolfgang Schussel will visit Cyprus early, next month, Cyprus House of Representatives President, Spyros Kyprianou, announced today.

Speaking after a meeting with President Glafcos Clerides, Kyprianou said the President briefed him on possible visits to Cyprus by foreign diplomats.

Kyprianou said Schussel will be accompanied by British Special representative for Cyprus, Sir David Hannay.

The aim of the Austrian Foreign Minister's visit is to "exchange views with the government in regards to Cyprus' accession course with the European Union," Kyprianou added.

Austria takes over the EU presidency from Britain on July 1. This is the second visit by Schussel to Cyprus in two months. He visited the island in April 1998.

The European Union started membership talks with Cyprus on March 31, 1998. Cyprus applied for EU membership in July 1990.
