    [01] President receives Canadian FM

Nicosia, Jun 11 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides received here today Canadian Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy, who is on a brief visit to Cyprus.

The Minister, who arrived here Wednesday, will review the political and security situation on the island and will reiterate Canada's commitment to a peacefully negotiated settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Present at this morning's meeting, which lasted about 50 minutes, was Cyprus' Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides.

Later today, he is due to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and visit the UN peace-keeping force headquarters here.

No statements to the press were made afterwards. Axworthy is on a tour of various countries to attend different meetings. Before coming to Cyprus, he was in Burkina Faso for the summit of the Organisation of African Unity and today he is flying to London to attend a special meeting of the G-8 Foreign Ministers to discuss the international response to India's and Pakistan's nuclear testing.

From London he will move to Rome for the diplomatic conference to establish the International Criminal Court.
