Warplanes of the Greek Air Force participating in the exercise flew today within the Nicosia Flight Information Region (FIR). Warships of the Greek Navy also took part in "Toxotis", which will be completed today. It was reported that the exercise aimed at testing the radars and the anti-aircraft systems of Cyprus' National Guard. The Spokesman's comments come in response to criticism from the press following yesterday's statement by President Glafcos Clerides that Cyprus supports Turkey's European course and understands the interests of EU member-states. The President also noted Cyprus is willing to help as much as it can towards this end. "The President's statement is crystal clear and should be seen as serving towards rectifying certain impression some are trying to form with regard to Turkey's European course," the spokesman added. He pointed out that "some wish to accuse Hellenism of objecting to Turkey's European course." For this reason, he added, President Clerides' statement was imperative and in line with the position adopted by the Greek government.
