    [01] Turks release gypsies

Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) -- The Turkish occupation regime released yesterday afternoon three Greek gypsies, apprehended last week in the UN-controlled buffer zone, Cyprus police have said.

A police spokesman told CNA that the three were in good health and did not bear any type of injury.

He said the UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus is trying to get back the car the gypsies were travelling in with the merchandise it contained, as well as their passports.

A UN doctor visited the three men last week and also found them in good health.

The released men are Christos Demetriou, 37, George Alexiou, 25 and George Charalambous, 35.

    [02] Turkish soldier arrested

Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) -- National Guard soldiers arrested late last night a Turkish soldier, clad in military uniform, who entered the government- controlled areas of the Republic.

Yiasin Botzali was walking near a main road leading to the southern town of Larnaca, when he was apprehended.

In a different incident in the capital Nicosia, two Romanians were arrested last night after entering Cyprus through an illegal port of entry, Kyrenia port in the Turkish-occupied northern part of the Republic.

The arrest was made in Nicosia, near a UN observation post. The UN handed over the two men, both in their twenties, to the Cyprus police.

Dragos Plamandeala, 20 and Julian Plamandeala, 23, told the police they had come to Cyprus in search of a job.

[04] Patriarch Bartholomew to visit Canada

    by Menelaos Hadjicostis

Toronto, May 19 (CNA) -- Preparations for a tour of Canada next week by the spiritual leader of 300 million Orthodox Christians world-wide have kicked into high gear and the excitement among the country's 750.000 faithful has reached a fever pitch.

"The enthusiasm of all Orthodox Christians here in Canada is great and the cooperation between all Orthodox Churches is absolute," His Eminence Metropolitan Archbishop Sotirios told CNA.

His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew I will embark on a seven-city pastoral and spiritual tour across Canada from May 25 to June 2, 1998.

He will be the first Ecumenical Patriarch to visit Canada in the 2000 year history of the Orthodox Church.

"I'm proud of all those who have worked for the Patriarch's visit and I am certain that our success will be absolute," Archbishop Sotirios said.

His All Holiness will arrive in Ottawa on May 25, where he will meet with Prime Minister Jean Chretien and Governor-General Romeo LeBlanc. From Ottawa, the Patriarch will travel to Vancouver, Winnipeg, London, Niagara Falls, Toronto and Montreal.

The Ecumenical Patriarch will preside over Pan-Orthodox religious services in each city he visits.

"All official bodies will receive the Patriarch with honours and all organisational committees have done a fantastic job and all is progressing splendidly," Archbishop Sotirios said.

The Archbishop noted that all Orthodox Churches will be represented at the Grand Banquet given in the Patriarch's honour in Toronto by the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto (Canada).

Grand Banquets will also be held at each city the Patriarch visits at which federal, provincial and municipal political leaders will attend.

In Toronto, the Patriarch will preside over a Patriarchical Divine Liturgy for the Feast of the Holy Fathers at Maple Leaf Gardens, the city's venerable sports arena with a capacity of over 25.000 people.

More than 15 Orthodox churches in Eastern Europe, Greece, Russia and the Middle East are part of the world-wide Orthodox Church. Among Orthodox leaders, the Ecumenical Patriarch is considered "first among equals". CNA/MH/GP/1998

[05] No package for Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, says British official

Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) -- A British official today said there is no formal package on the Cyprus problem, Greco-Turkish relations and the improvement of European Union relations with Ankara.

"They are separate issues in our analysis. It may be that one issue has an influence on another but there isn't a package approach," said David Reddaway, head of the Foreign Office Southern European Affairs Department.

Reddaway was speaking after what he described as "an extremely agreeable and informative" meeting with President Glafcos Clerides, with whom he discussed the Cyprus problem and European Union (EU) issues. He was accompanied by British High Commissioner David Madden.

He refrained from replying to a question if the British rotating EU presidency will be putting forward a package of new suggestion for the improvement of relations with Turkey, noting that Foreign Secretary Robin Cook will be in Ankara today.

"He is going to be discussing the way forward in EU-Turkey relations," Reddaway said.

He added that "what we very much hope is that Mr. Cook's visit will help put EU-Turkey relations on to a more positive path, but I think talk of a package in our terms is possibly a bit misleading."

Asked how these suggestion could affect the Cyprus issue, Reddaway noted "there isn't a formal package in any way at all".

Speaking in London yesterday the US President and the British Premier said they believe that problems relating to Greco-Turkish relations, Cyprus, and Turkey's EU aspirations have to be tackled in a comprehensive manner and not in isolation.

The British official refrained from revealing details of his discussion with President Clerides.

"It seem to be a constantly moving picture here, although sometimes one gets the other impression. It's been very helpful to have a first hand up- to-date view of the President's impression on the present situation," he said.

Efforts to solve the Cyprus question have reached a deadlock after demands by the Turkish side for recognition of the illegal regime in the Turkish-occupied areas of the island and the withdrawal of Cyprus' application to join the EU.

Reddaway said they did not discuss the issue of Turkish Cypriot participation in the official team negotiating Cyprus' accession to the EU, that got underway in March.

"We are aware that the President's offer remains on the table and our position remains that we hope that the Turkish Cypriots will accept it," he added.

Reddaway, who is on his first working visit to Cyprus, said he will call on other senior officials until his departure Thursday. Earlier today he was received by House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou. Tomorrow he is scheduled to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

[06] British parachutists practice in Cyprus

Nicosia, May 19 CNA -- About 100 British parachutists of the UK-based 2nd Battalion, Parachute Regiment, were dropped from a Royal Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft yesterday onto "Ladies Mile Beach", near RAF Akrotiri, on the island's southern coast, as part of an annual training deployment.

According to a British Forces press release, the flight of the C-130 Hercules type aircraft to Cyprus is the first since 1994 that has been made following the extensive re-opening of the British military Kingsfield airstrip built near Dhekelia Garrison, during the 1950s and the refurbishment to the runaway that took place this year.

The Hercules aircraft - workhorse of armies across the world- landed and took off twice at Kinkgsfield this morning, transporting some 120 infantry soldiers based at Episkopi and Dhekelia Garrisons to and from RAF Akrotiri.

"The purpose of this flight was to test the new runaway and to make sure that everything works okay", the British Bases spokesman Marvyn Jones told CNA.

"It is a very small airstrip and its practical use, and application mean that aircraft, such as Hercules, can land direct at Dhekelia rather than Akrotiri and offloads supplies, personnel or whatever from one end to the other", Jones noted.

Britain has retained two sovereign military bases on this former British colony, under the 1960 Treaty of Establishment of the Cyprus Republic.
