[01] President Clerides expresses satisfaction with air base

The President flew by helicopter to the south-western Paphos district where he inspected the newly-constructed base there.

He was escorted by Defence Minister, George Charalambides, and National Guard Chief Lieutenant General, Nikolaos Vorvolakos.

"The way the base is constructed could be considered as a model," the President said.

Clerides refrained from answering to a question whether Greek planes will be stationed at the base, expected to be named after late Greek Premier, Andreas Papandreou.

Asked when the base will be officially inaugurated, he replied "we will set a date".

The base was handed over to the government by the construction company on January 24 and Government Spokesman Manolis Christofides said it will be officially inaugurated after this month's presidential elections.

[03] European Socialists support Lyssarides' candidature

Francois Vallin, who was speaking at a Press Conference, is visiting Cyprus on the invitation of presidential candidate and leader of EDEK socialist party, Vassos Lyssarides.

The Socialist Leader pointed out that Lyssarides maintains good relations with 12 out of the 15 European Union (EU) countries, headed by socialist governments.

He added, however, that the decision on who will be the new President lies with the people of Cyprus.

Presidential elections will be carried out in Cyprus on Sunday, February 8.

Yesterday Vallin addressed a rally held by EDEK in Nicosia.

Asked to comment on Turkey's European prospects, Vallin said, "it does not fulfill the conditions to be a candidate" but added that all socialists governments wish that Turkey does not turn its back on Europe.

The Socialist leader said he hoped Ankara would abide by certain conditions, such as respect of international law and the resolution of any differences with its neighbours in the International Court of Justice.

On his part, Lyssarides stressed that Cyprus' accession to the EU would assist a solution to the Cyprus problem.

He also said that "once Cyprus, with the support of European Socialists, joins the EU, the resolution of the Cyprus problem will be placed as one of the conditions for closer relations between Turkey and the EU".

[04] Spokesman on T/C participation in accession talks

This was pointed out today by Government Spokesman, Manolis Christofides, commenting on reports that British Representative for Cyprus, Sir David Hanney, has asked for an "attractive" proposal on the part of the Cyprus Republic.

"A proposal which is reasonable and sensible is, in a political framework, attractive", Crhistofides said.

"The Cyprus government will see to a reasonable representation, but the negotiator will be the government of the Republic of Cyprus", he stressed.

Expressing satisfaction because EU officials consider government proposals on the issue as reasonable, Christofides said there are thoughts for the formulation of a specific proposal in March.

He added, however, that "there will be no additions that will go over the limits" that are acceptable to the government.

Christofides repeated that Turkish Cypriot participation in the negotiating team should not imply recognition of the illegal regime unilaterally established in the northern Turkish occupied part of the island in 1983.

He also stressed that those participating should support Cyprus' European course and said the government will not continue giving new proposals if the Turkish Cypriots refuse to accept them.

[05] Former Education Minister passes away

For the past month Petrides was undergoing treatment at the Nicosia General Hospital for a pulmonary oedema.

Petrides was born in Nicosia in 1915 and studied at the University of Athens Philosophy School.

He taught literature, served as secondary school headmaster, and also headed the board of directors of both the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation and the Cyprus Tourism Organisation.

Petrides was appointed Minister of Education in 1970, by the late Archbishop Makarios, and served in this post for two years.

He was married to Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe, Thalia Petridou.

[06] Cypriot buildings receive Europa Nostra awards

The medieval Monastery of Sinti, situated in the Xeropotamos valley in the south-western district of Paphos, dates back to the 16th century, while the traditional house in Nicosia to the early 20th century.

The renovation of the Monastery was undertaken by a group of five architects: Naso Chrysochou, Artemis Psevdodiakos, Eleni, Petropoulou, Elena Kalliri and Maria Philokyprou.

Funding for its renovation came from Kykkos Monastery, on an initiative from Abbot Nikiforos.

Chrysochou told CNA the Monastery will be used as an open air museum while medieval findings will also be exhibited in one of its rooms.

She pointed out that there are many medieval monuments, including chapels, mills and bridges in the area around the monastery.

The traditional house, in Ayioi Omoloyites suburb of Nicosia, was renovated by architects Antonia Theodosiou and Naso Chrysochou, while the owners, Achilleas Kentonis and Maria Papacharalambous, also contributed considerably.

During renovation, the architects discovered ancient tombs under the house which have been preserved.

Europa Nostra awards were established in 1978 and are given to work contributing to the preservation of European architecture and natural heritage.

It is not the first time buildings in Cyprus received a Europa Nostra award.

The Famagusta Gate, that forms part of the Venetian walls in the capital which is now used as a cultural centre, and the old electricity authority building, today used as an art centre, are among buildings that received the award.
