[01] President Clerides Honorary Member of Russian Academy

Nicosia, Feb 2 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides was declared here today Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences.

Announcing the decision during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace, Academy's Vice President Vladimir Pirumov praised President Clerides' "internationally acknowledged political stature and endless efforts to achieve a lasting solution to the Cyprus problem".

He named former UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeni Primakov and Israeli President Ezer Weizman as among those who have already received this title.

Accepting the honour, President Clerides noted that "the dream of peace is in the heart of the people of Cyprus who are still being plagued by the evils of war, violence and injustice".

President Clerides said although Turkey has been occupying one third of the island's territory and poses a threat to the free areas of the Republic, and although the problem of refugees and missing persons remains unresolved, "we continue to struggle for the restoration of justice for the people of Cyprus as a whole."

Among those present at the ceremony was Russian Ambassador to Cyprus Georgi Muradov.

[02] Russian missiles to be delivered as scheduled

Nicosia, Feb 2 (CNA) -- Government Spokesman, Manolis Christofides and Russian Ambassador to Cyprus, Georgi Muratov, both stressed today the Russian S-300 anti-aircraft missiles will be delivered according to the contract of purchase.

Christofides dismissed claims in the Turkish press that the delivery of the missiles could be delayed because of a strike in one of the factories that manufacture them in St. Petersburg.

He also dismissed claims by independent candidate for Sunday's presidential elections, George Iakovou, that he could deliver the missiles earlier than scheduled.

Christofides and Muratov said the missiles will be delivered as planned. The missiles are due in Cyprus in mid-summer.

Muratov also said that it was not possible to disclose the date of delivery because it concerns a matter of national security for Cyprus.

[04] DIKO Vice-President backs expelled party deputy

Nicosia, Feb 2 (CNA) -- A senior official of the Democratic Party (DIKO), which broke ranks with the government to support the President's main rival in Sunday's election, has given his full backing to a DIKO deputy who is also running for the presidency.

DIKO Vice-President, Dinos Michaelides, expressed today his support for the candidature of deputy Alexis Galanos, against the party decision to back George Iacovou.

Michaelides announced his decision at a press conference, also attended by DIKO MP Katerina Pantelidou, former Labour and Social Insurance Minister Andreas Mousioutas and other high ranking party members.

Michaelides has maintained that DIKO should contest the presidential elections with its own candidate. He made his views public and the party decided to bring him before a disciplinary committee. Galanos was expelled from DIKO once he announced his decision to contest the elections.

Pointing out that Iacovou does not belong to the party ranks, Michaelides called on DIKO members to support the candidacy of former House President and MP for Famagusta district, Alexis Galanos.

"Under the current circumstances, Galanos' candidacy can be formally backed by DIKO as it offers a respectable way out of our dilemmas," Michaelides told the press.

DIKO Central Committee decided last December to back independent candidate Iacovou, also supported by left-wing AKEL.

Following this decision, the party came under fire from disgruntled members who disagreed with it.

DIKO was a partner in the government of incumbent President Glafcos Clerides until mid-November 1997, when its five ministers withdrew from the cabinet.
