[01] British FO comments on T/C reaction

London, Jan 21 (CNA) -- The decision to require visas from Turkish Cypriots is a technical measure and has no political importance, a spokesman for the Foreign Office here has said.

Invited by CNA to comment on Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash's decision not to see Britain's special representative on Cyprus, Sir David Hannay, until the issue is resolved, the spokesman said:

"Sir David is not planning to visit Cyprus until after the presidential elections (next month), therefore he hasn't requested a meeting with Denktash".

The spokesman reiterated that "Britain is supporting the UN effort for the solution of the Cyprus problem, and sticks to that policy".

He said the visa measure "is of a technical nature, without any political importance and is aiming at controlling the immigration problem".

London said last week it would end visa-free entry to the holders of Turkish Cypriot travel documents after a spate of unfounded asylum claims.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.
