1435:CYPPRESS:01[01] Polling stations announcedNicosia, Jan 19 (CNA) -- More than 1,000 polling stations will operate in Cyprus on election day, February 8, the office of the chief returning officer announced here today.An official press release said 1,023 polling stations will be manned in five of the island's six districts. No polling will take place in the sixth district, Kyrenia, because it continues to be occupied by Turkish troops since they invaded in 1974. In Nicosia there will be 379 stations, in Limassol 318, in the government controlled areas of Famagusta district 44, in Larnaca 162 and in Paphos 120. The official announcement said four polling stations, one in each of the main districts (Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos) will operate for enclaved Greek Cypriots, mainly elderly, who live in Turkish occupied Cyprus. More than 410,000 people will cast their vote in this year's presidential elections. Voting is compulsory by law and 18-year-olds have the right to vote for the first time. Seven candidates, including incumbent President Glafcos Clerides, are running for the presidency. A second ballot is almost certain to take place on February 15 as no candidate seems to be able to get 50 per cent plus on the first ballot. CNA MA/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1540:CYPPRESS:03[03] Government pleased with Russian reactionNicosia, Jan 19 (CNA) -- The government has welcomed Russia's response to an illegal cooperation protocol between Turkey and the self-styled Turkish Cypriot regime in the areas of Cyprus occupied since the 1974 Turkish invasion."We endorse fully Moscow's strong reaction to Ankara's decision to sign a cooperation protocol with the so-called foreign ministry of the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime," Government Spokesman Manolis Christofides said here today. A Russian Foreign Ministry official had said the "signing of the protocol for closer cooperation between the Turkish Foreign Ministry and the illegal, secessionist fabrication will undoubtedly make prospects in finding a just and viable Cyprus settlement more difficult, in view of the intense efforts expected in the forthcoming months." The 'agreement' has provoked "ironic comments and sarcastic discussions in international diplomacy", the Russian official said. He also questioned how "diplomats" representing an illegal regime could represent Turkey's interests, as provided by the 'agreement.' CNA RG/MM/MA/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1900:CYPPRESS:04[04] Exchange of information on missing FridayNicosia, Jan 19 (CNA) -- The Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides will exchange information on missing persons on Friday, UNFICYP spokesman Waldemar Rokoszewski, told CNA today."This is a very important step and the execution of the July 31st agreement on the missing, brokered by UN deputy special representative in Cyprus, Gustave Feissel, between the leaders of the two communities," Rokoszewski said. The July agreement stipulates that "the two leaders agree to provide each other immediately and simultaneously all information already at their disposal on the location of graves of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot missing persons." The two leaders designated a person for the exchange of information and preparation of "the necessary arrangements leading to the return of the remains of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot missing persons in question." The UN spokesman told CNA he believed "further steps will be discussed at Friday's meeting" on how to proceed with the matter. Takis Christopoulos, representing the Greek Cypriot side, and Rustem Tatar, representing the Turkish Cypriot side, will meet in the presence Feissel, Friday morning, at the latter's residence in the UN controlled buffer zone in Nicosia. Christopoulos described Friday's meeting as "important" and said it marked "the first phase of the implementation of the July agreement." He also said each side will evaluate the information handed to it. Christopoulos said Friday's meeting will be taken up with the exchange of information and he did not think any other matter will be discussed. CNA MM/MA/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY2035:CYPPRESS:05[05] American, Greek officials discuss CyprusAthens, Jan 19 (CNA) -- The Cyprus question was the only issue a senior US official discussed with Greek Foreign Ministry officials here today, according to well informed sources.Tomas Miller, US State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus, had a 90-minute meeting with Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos, Foreign Under-Secretary Yiannos Kranidiotis and US ambassador to Greece Nicholas Burns. Miller has already visited Ankara and is due to leave the Greek capital tomorrow for Washington.
