CNA MCH/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1600:CYPPRESS:02[02] Austrian House President for boosting bilateral cooperationNicosia Oct 3 (CNA) -- Austria's House President, Heinz Fischer, believes there are "good preconditions" to boost bilateral cooperationHe also acknowledged that the next few years will be particularly important for Cyprus, as the country begins membership talks with the European Union. Speaking after meeting his Cypriot counterpart Spyros Kyprianou, Fischer said the purpose of his brief visit is: "To improve the relations between Austria and Cyprus, exchange information, have a look at the present situation, contribute to a peaceful development and in particular between the two parliaments." Kyprianou thanked Fischer for Austria's contribution to the UN peace- keeping force in Cyprus and briefed him on the latest developments in Cyprus. Fischer, heading a six member delegation, will meet with party leaders, Nicosia Municipality councillors, Acting Foreign Minister and visit the Austrian contingent. CNA MM/MCH/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1910:CYPPRESS:03[03] AFP Middle East bureau marks 10th birthdayNicosia Oct 3 (CNA) -- Cyprus offers an ideal location with excellent links to strategic points in the region for Agence France Presse, AFP chairman Jean Miot said here today."We have no intention of leaving Cyprus, one of four regional offices," he told CNA at today's inauguration of a photo exhibition to mark ten years of AFP Middle East headquarters in Nicosia. AFP operates regional offices in Washington, Paris, Nicosia, Hong Kong and soon in Montevideo. Miot said AFP enjoys an "extraordinary welcome" in Cyprus and does not really face any problems in its local operations. More than 50 colour photos were on display depicting scenes from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Gulf War, Vietnam and Cyprus. In his remarks to the guests, Miot said AFP managed to fulfill its double objective, to operate under conditions of total freedom and show the Agency is also a photoagency. "Ten years is still a young age, we have a bright future ahead of us," he said. Foreign ambassadors including the French, Israeli, Greek and European Union head of delegation were present at the opening of the exhibition. The exhibition will be open until October 10.
