[01] Cypriot doctor receives US pediatric urology medal

Nicosia, Sep 2 (CNA) -- A prominent Greek Cypriot medical professor, living and working in the US, has been awarded with the Pediatric Urology Medal, the award of the Urology Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics, for his long-standing offer and achievements in pediatric urology.

Panayiotis (Panos) P. Kelalis, from the Turkish-occupied eastern village of Yialousa, currently Chairman of the Department of Urology at the Mayo Clinic, in Jacksoville, was the 1996 recipient of the Pediatric Urology Medal.

The award was presented at the annual meeting of the Section on Urology, of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The September 1997 edition of the "Journal of Urology", issued by the American Urological Association, publishes the papers presented at the Boston, Massachusetts, meeting.

Among them is the nomination of professor Kelalis for the medal, which is not always awarded annually by a special committee, and signed by one of Kelalis' former students, Stephen Kramer, of the Department of Urology, Mayo Clinic, in Rotchester, Minessota.

The world famous professor of urology told CNA he accepted the award with "great pleasure and satisfaction, but with some kind of modesty."

"Standing at this position, as a Greek Cypriot, makes me feel much better," he explained.

With regard to his future plans, he said "I work at the Mayo clinic, and that's where I will continue to work," he added.

In the committee's nomination, Kramer said Dr. Panos Kelalis "for the past 25 years has been one of the foremost authorities in pediatric urology in the world and remains so today."

He referred to Kelalis' academic career noting he advanced through all the academic ranks, from assistant professor to Chairman of the Department of Urology at the Mayo Clinic.

He became President of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Section of Urology, and recently culminated his term on the Residency Review Committee as a chairman.

Kramer praised his mentor's efforts to establish an education, a research and a clinical practise committee and his abilities to manage and improve their area of expertise.

Under his chairmanship, he added, "Mayo urology ranks consistently among the top residency training programmes in the country and has been listed first or second for the last 5 years by US News and World Report."

He also said Kelalis instituted a mandatory "academic research year", which remains one of the strong points of the residency programme and praised his writing of more than 240 papers and his presentations in all five continents.

"Panos is a superb surgeon and has described a variety of techniques in pediatric urology, most of which are used routinely today," Kramer added.

He also said his foremost editorial accomplishment is clearly as senior editor of "Clinical Pediatric Urology", a textbook he described as the "Bible" in this field that will publish its fourth edition in the near future.

"This award holds great esteem at the Mayo Medical Centre, and I can assure you that the urology residents take a tremendous amount of pride and responsibility in selecting an annual recipient," Kramer told the meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Section of Urology.

Summarizing the Greek Cypriot professor's titles, efforts and responsibilities in a single sentence he said "he basically runs the clinic".

"For the last 16 years it has been my privilege to call Panos my friend, colleague and mentor. I can think of no one more deserving of the Pediatric Urology Medal than Panos Kelalis," Kramer concluded.

    [03] Kasoulides meets Estonian officials

Nicosia, Sep 2 (CNA) -- Cyprus' Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, currently on a tour of six European capitals, has met with his Estonian counterpart and other high ranking officials.

Kasoulides was received Monday by Estonian Prime Minister Mart Siimann and later on he had a meeting with the country's Foreign Minister Toomas Hendrik Ilves.

Cyprus and Estonia agreed to support each other for their bid to become members of the European Union (EU), an official press release issued here said.

The two ministers agreed to cooperate closely to cope with problems each country faces during their EU accession course.

Kasoulides briefed Ilves on the latest developments in the protracted Cyprus problem and assured him of the government's political will for a solution the soonest possible.

On his part, Ilves briefed Kasoulides on the steps Estonia takes towards a free market and liberalising its economy, in view of its preparation for EU entry.

The two ministers agreed to have regular contacts and Kasoulides invited his Estonian counterpart to visit Cyprus.

The Cypriot Foreign Minister had also meetings with Estonia's President Lennart Meri and the House Deputy Speaker, Tunne Kelam, who also chairs the parliamentary committee on European affairs.

Kasoulides started on Sunday a tour of six European countries, namely Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Germany, Luxembourg and Italy, discussing the Cyprus problem and the island's bid to become a full EU member.

    [04] Cyprus protests British document

Nicosia, Sep 2 (CNA) -- Cyprus made representations to the government of Britain and its High Commission in Nicosia, against an official document circulated by the British Bases on the island, referring to the illegal regime in the Turkish-occupied north as the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus".

This was stated today by Government Spokesman Manolis Christofides who also pointed out that British officials are expected to act in compliance with UN resolutions on Cyprus, which "call upon all states not to recognise any Cypriot state other than the Republic of Cyprus" (Resolution 541, 1983).

The Spokesman described as "unacceptable" an official document circulated yesterday by the Commander of the British Bases, Air Vice- Marshall Peter Millar, regarding visits of Bases' personnel to the occupied areas, referring to the self-styled entity unilaterally declared in the northern part of the Republic as the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus".

He said the government expects a "positive response" to its representations, noting that Britain, as a guarantor power of the Cyprus Republic and a UN Security Council permanent member, should respect UN resolutions on Cyprus.

The puppet regime in the Turkish-occupied part of the island is recognised only by Turkey. The UN has called "upon all states not to recognise the purported state of the 'TRNC' set up by secessionist acts and calls upon them not to facilitate or in any way assist the aforesaid secessionist entity".

"Therefore, acts like this, are contrary to all these declarations, and for this reason a formal protest will be lodged and relevant representations are made through diplomatic channels", Christofides noted.

House of Representatives President, Spyros Kyprianou, also condemned the British action, describing it as "unacceptable" and noting that this is a "very serious" incident which should be dealt with by the Cyprus government immediately.

Ruling right-wing Democratic Rally (DISY) party leader, Nicos Anastasiades, said this was a "deplorable act", adding that representations are being made "not only in the direction of correcting this text, but the policy as such".
