CNA MM/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1700:CYPPRESS:02[02] Greek Cypriots to visit Turkish-occupied MonasteryNicosia, Aug 6 (CNA) -- Some 600 Greek Cypriots will visit the Turkish- occupied Monastery of Apostolos Andreas, patron saint of the island, on August 15 for one of the most important religious pilgrimages in the Greek Orthodox Church.This was announced here today by Presidential Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Takis Christopoulos, who added that some 400 Turkish Cypriots will come to the free areas of the Republic to visit the village of Kokkina, on the north-western coast of the island. Christopoulos said both sides will take the necessary measures to make sure that the visits take place without any problems. He also said a second visit to the Turkish-occupied Monastery could take place on Saint Andreas' day, November 30. Speaking to the press Government Spokesman, Manolis Christofides said the visits were agreed by President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, during their recent meetings in Nicosia to discuss humanitarian issues. Christofides said "things seem to be running smoothly so far", and added that the two sides will not have the right to raise procedural issues or objections on the names to be included in the lists. A trip to Apostolos Andreas had to be cancelled last April after the Turkish-occupation regime insisted on vetting the list of persons wishing to visit the occupied Monastery. Only a week earlier some 450 Turkish Cypriots had crossed to the government controlled areas of the Republic for a pilgrimage to Hala Sultan Tekke mosque in Larnaca. CNA MCH/MM/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1705:CYPPRESS:03[03] National Council reconvenes ahead of UN talksNicosia, Aug 6 (CNA) -- The National Council (top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus problem) will decide tomorrow about the observations the Greek Cypriot side will make on a UN non paper, submitted to the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides at the first round of direct talks in Troutbeck, New York.Government Spokesman, Manolis Christofides, said today that according to the second revised non-paper, prepared by UN Chief's Special Advisor on the Cyprus problem, Diego Cordovez, the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides will submit documents on the Constitution and the UN on the remaining aspects of the Cyprus question. "There will be remarks on this point expressing (the Greek Cypriot side's) opposition," he said, noting that the issue will be clarified during tomorrow's meeting. Christofides also said that all basic aspects of the Cyprus problem will be discussed during the second round of talks adding, that if the two sides agree to sign any document, that will outline future proceedings. Pointing out that the Cordovez document is a non-paper, the Government Spokesman noted that both "the document and the methodology are open to discussion in the forthcoming talks." He also repeated that even if the two sides reach a deadlock, this should not lead to a long break of negotiations because time consolidates the existing situation. CNA MA/MCH/MM/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1915:CYPPRESS:04[04] Russia welcomes agreement on missingNicosia, Aug 6 (CNA) -- Russia has welcomed an agreement on humanitarian issues between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and reaffirmed its determination to contribute towards a solution of the Cyprus problem.Describing the agreement on moves to help locate the whereabouts or remains of missing persons as "important", a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry welcomed the "good-will shown by the two leaders that allowed for an understanding on such an important humanitarian issue." Speaking at a press conference in Moscow, the spokesman also expressed hope that the "good atmosphere that prevailed at the first round of talks in Troutbeck, New York and at the Nicosia meetings" will continue during the second round of talks, scheduled to take place in Switzerland, August 11 to 16. "We would like to reaffirm Russia's readiness to contribute towards the promotion of a permanent and comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem", the spokesman concluded.
