1045:CYPPRESS:01[01] National Council meetsNicosia, Jun 23 (CNA) -- The National Council, chaired by President Glafcos Clerides, began a meeting here today in view of the forthcoming UN- sponsored direct talks on Cyprus.Parliamentary party leaders and their deputies, members of the National Council, did not make any statements to the press as they arrived at the Presidential Palace for today's crucial meeting. The Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem, is expected to determine the strategy of the Greek Cypriot side at the talks, scheduled for 9-13 July, near New York. The session will also decide whether party leaders will accompany the President on his trip to New York. Present at today's meeting are Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, Attorney General Alecos Markides, Under-Secretary to the President, Pantelis Kouros, and Government Spokesman Manolis Christophides. "Council members examined everything relating to the direct talks in New York, under the aegis of UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, and expressed their views," Christofides told the press. "Party leaders also submitted proposals on issues concerning tactics and other substantive issues," he added. CNA RG/MM/AP/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1515:CYPPRESS:03[03] Cyprus Tourism - statisticsNicosia, Jun 23 (CNA) --The number of tourists from Russia and the rest of the former Soviet republics is increasing rapidly, rendering these countries the most expanding tourist markets for Cyprus.Statistics released by the Association of Cyprus Travel Agents (ACTA) show that the number of tourists from Germany, the Scandinavian countries, Greece and Israel is also increasing, but at a lower rate. In 1993, 21.000 visitors came to Cyprus from Russia and other former Soviet republics, and in 1996 their numbers reached 130.000, representing 6, 7 per cent of the year's total number of tourists. The largest tourist market for Cyprus is the UK with 720.000 visitors in 1996, representing 36,9 per cent of the total, followed by Germany with 240.000 (12,3 per cent), the Scandinavian countries with 235.000 (12,0 per cent) and Russia. According to ACTA statistics, in 1994 visitors to the island spent an average 389,6 Cyprus pounds (one pound is about two US dollars) per visitor, compared with 382 pounds spent in 1995 and 1996. The average amount of money visitors spent per day increased, reaching 34,8 pounds in 1996 from 28,3 pounds in 1990, while in the same period, the average stay moved in the opposite direction, and fell from 13 days to 11 days.
