The charge of placing a bomb carries a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment, he said. Spying charges carry a maximum ten year jail sentence. He pointed out that a trial on espionage charges would probably disclose sensitive information relating to the Republic's defences. Klerides also indicated that Nedjip's Turkish Cypriot lawyers, who live in the Turkish occupied part of the island, may carry in their voluminous files on the case classified information about the Republic's defences. Nedjip, arrested on March 8 this year, was due to appear before the Assize Court in June to face charges of espionage and placing a bomb. He will now be charged with placing explosives, possession of explosives, a time bomb and a detonator. Police had found in his possession military documents, maps outlining the positions of army camps and newspaper clippings on National Guard matters. Limassol District Court, which referred the case to the Assize Court, released last month another Turk and a Turkish Cypriot, initially held in connection with espionage charges for lack of evidence.
