[01] Non-Aligned reiterate solidarity with Cyprus government

Nicosia, Apr 9 (CNA) -- The Ministers of 113 countries participating in the 12th Ministerial Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement, "reiterated their support for the sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, and their solidarity with the people and the Government of Cyprus".

In an extract on Cyprus, in the final communique issued by the Conference, which was concluded yesterday in New Delhi, the Ministers "called once again for the withdrawal of all occupation forces and settlers, the return of the refugees to their homes in conditions of safety, and the accounting for those missing".

The communique also reiterates "that the present status quo in Cyprus, created and maintained by the use of force, is unacceptable" and stresses "the need for securing compliance with and implementation of all UN resolutions and to that end for the Security Council to take resolute action and measures".

According to the communique, such measures should include "the holding of an international conference and the demilitarisation of Cyprus, as proposed by the President of Cyprus".

Furthermore, the Ministers, "expressing their concern at the continuing lack of political will on the part of the Turkish side", reaffirm their support to "the UN Secretary-General's efforts for a just and workable solution" to the Cyprus problem and "request the contact group of Non- Aligned countries to actively follow and support such efforts".

Head of the Cyprus delegation at the Conference was the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alecos Shambos, who expressed in a statement at the Conference, "the sincere gratitude and thanks of my country for the solidarity and support that our Movement has consistently demonstrated over the year for a just, viable and lasting solution to the question of Cyprus".

New Justice and Public Order Minister, Nicos Koshis, assured everybody he would give his utmost to the job he has to do, while his predecessor, Alecos Evangelou, said he leaves with a clear conscience and wished Koshis every success.

Outgoing minister Claire Angelidou described the new minister, a former headmaster, as an outstanding teacher and expressed certainty he will offer all he can.

[04] New non-surgical method for child heart problem

Nicosia, Apr 9 (CNA) -- A new non-surgical method for treating a heart problem faced by some children has been applied at the Nicosia General Hospital, by two Cypriot and a British paedocardiologists.

The new method closes patent ductus arteriosus, an artery which should close after birth but does in the case of some children remain open and was applied in the case of three young girls aged from one to two and a half years.

Dr. Panayiotis Zarvos, in charge of the Paedocardiological clinic at Makarios Hospital in Nicosia, who along with paedocardiologists Antonis Josef and British John Gibbs from the Bupa Hospitals of Britain, applied the new method, told CNA "the three girls left the hospital today with no health problems."

He explained that "during cardiac catheterisation, a catheter is advanced from the foot into the heart and into this artery and a coil is liberated into the artery. This has as a result the closure of the artery."

Dr. Zarvos added that other non-surgical methods have been applied in recent years but described this new method as "the best".

Noting that this method has been applied abroad very recently, he pointed out that from now on children in Cyprus can be treated at home, thus saving considerable funds.

He also told CNA that it is estimated that 7-8 cases of children with closed patent ductus arteriosus were sent abroad for treatment every year.

Dr. Zarvos said more than 10 children suffering from this disorder are born every year in Cyprus.

[05] Christofides calls on Turkish side to abandon intransigent stance

Nicosia, Apr 9 (CNA) -- It is up to the UN Secretary General to evaluate his meeting today, in Geneva, with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, new Government Spokesman, Manolis Christofides, said today, asked what the government expects from the meeting.

Christofides added that "the government expects the Turkish side to abandon its intransigent position if a solution to the protracted Cyprus problem is to be found."

He noted that Turkey's intransigent stance towards the Cyprus issue, in the past two decades, proves that Turkey continues to occupy part of Cyprus since its 1974 invasion of the island, not to protect the Turkish Cypriots "but to serve its own interests."

Commenting on a statement made by Denktash that he does not support a settlement which would provide for a federal solution in Cyprus, Chrisofides pointed out that there are two high level agreements, signed between the two communities in 1977 and 1979, providing for a federal solution.

The new Spokesman called on Denktash to outline the kind of solution he wants in Cyprus and ruled out the possibility of a confederation as "it would not be in line with UN resolutions on Cyprus."

[06] Turkish Cypriot leader meets UN chief

Nicosia, Apr 9 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, has called on President Glafcos Clerides for direct negotiations, in a bid to reach a solution to the protracted Cyprus problem.

In statements in Geneva today, after his first meeting with the UN Secretary General, since Kofi Annan took up his post, Denktash claimed the Cyprus government is to blame for the lack of progress towards a Cyprus settlement.

The Cyprus government has rejected face-to-face negotiations until the ground has been set and unless they are well prepared, in order to ensure their success.

According to the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation, Denktash described his meeting with Annan as useful and constructive and said he agreed with the Secretary General that the UN-led investigatory talks should continue until June.

The UN has stepped up efforts to reach a solution to the Cyprus problem, and is holding investigatory talks with the two sides, hoping they will lead to face-to-face negotiations between President Clerides and Rauf Denktash before the end of the first half of this year.

President Glafcos Clerides had met Annan in Davos, Switzerland, earlier this year.
