[01] Turkish troops interfere with humanitarian mission

Nicosia, Feb 22 (CNA) -- The Turkish occupation regime refused today to a Limassol General Hospital doctor to treat enclaved patients in the Maronite Kormakitis village in the northern occupied part of the island.

Joseph Moutiris told CNA Turkish soldiers stopped him at Ledra Palace check point in Nicosia and refused him access to his patients, claiming he did not possess a so-called work permit illegally issued by the occupation regime.

Commissioner for Humanitarian Issues Takis Christopoulos as well as UN Chief Humanitarian Officer, Tisi Bana, have been informed of the incident, he said and expressed the wish the issue will soon be resolved so as to be allowed to carry out his humanitarian mission.

Moutiris has been visiting the Turkish-occupied areas since 1995 to treat enclaved patients.

As UN Peace-keeping Force (UNFICYP) Spokesman, Waldemar Rokoszewski told CNA, the UN "is constantly working on this issue as the Turkish Cypriots insist that sufficient medical treatment is provided", and refuse to allow Greek Cypriot doctors to visit their patients in the northern occupied part of the island.

He did however point out that according to the Third Vienna Agreement, signed between the two sides in 1975, Greek Cypriots who remain enclaved in the Turkish occupied areas are entitled to "medical care by their own doctors."

[02] Siderenios lost his way and drove into occupied areas

Nicosia, Feb 22 (CNA) -- The Greek Cypriot apprehended by the Turkish occupation forces had most probably lost his way and entered the occupied areas, a UN Peace-keeping Force Spokesman (UNFICYP), told CNA today.

Waldemar Rokoszewski told CNA young Savvas Louca Siderenios was apprehended by so-called Turkish Cypriot police when he passed into the occupied areas "driving a car with no number plates", late last night.

"Most probably he lost his way", Rokoszewski said adding that Siderenios was detained in Famagusta and was then transferred to the occupied part of Nicosia.

The Spokesman said UNFICYP was in touch with the illegal Turkish occupation authorities and was making every possible effort to secure Siderenios' release as soon as possible.
