[01] President Clerides leaves today for New York

Nicosia, Sep 22 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides leaves Sunday afternoon for New York, where he is scheduled to address the 51st UN General Assembly and meet the UN Secretary-General, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, on Thursday.

President Clerides will have a series of meetings with US, UN and European Union (EU) diplomats on the sidelines of the Assembly.

On Tuesday, the President will sign the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty and give a lecture at the Carnegie Council.

He will also hold separate meetings with Polish President, Aleksander Kwasniewski, Latvia's Prime Minister, Andris Skele, and Irish Foreign Minister, Dick Spring, whose country holds the EU rotating presidency. EU Commissioner for External Relations, Hans Van Den Brooke is expected to be present at this meeting.

On Friday, Clerides will meet Britain's Foreign Secretary, Malcolm Rifkind, and US Ambassador to the UN, Madeleine Albright, who had visited Cyprus earlier this year.

During his week-long stay, President Clerides will meet media representatives, open an exhibition of relics from Cyprus' struggle for independence from Britain, at the Cyprus House in New York, and attend the annual dinner of the Cypriot Federation of America.

The President returns to Cyprus September 30, in time to take the salute at a military parade to mark Cyprus' Independence Day, 1 October.
