    [01] Hijacked plane takes off

Larnaca, Aug 27 (CNA) -- A hijacked Sudan Airways plane left Larnaca Airport early this morning after nearly three hours on the ground.

It landed at 2310 local time (2010 GMT) and took off at 0145 local time (2245 GMT).

The plane, an Airbus 310 with 186 passengers and 13 crew members, was given permission to land here as it was running out of fuel after it was hijacked while flying from Khartoum to Amman.

[02] Committee calls for respect of human rights in Cyprus

Nicosia, Aug 27 (CNA) -- The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has fully supported freedom of movement and other human rights and freedoms for all Cypriots.

A press release issued at the end of its 49th session in New York, the Committee ''deeply regretted the killing of two unarmed Greek Cypriot young men and the injury of many others, including UN peacekeepers, as a result of the Turkish forces allowing armed Turkish Cypriot civilians and others to pass through the United Nations buffer zone, where they clashed with the demonstrators.''

The Committee reaffirmed ''the importance of achieving progress in resolving the situation in Cyprus so that freedom of movement and other human rights and freedoms would be enjoyed by all Cypriots, irrespective of their ethnic origin.''

Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.

The Turkish invasion troops have forcibly uprooted some 200.000 Greek Cypriots (one third of the island's population) from their homes and properties.

A total of 1.619 people were listed as missing in addition to some 6.000 people who were killed by the Turkish invasion troops in 1974.

The European Human Rights Commission of the Council of Europe has repeatedly found Turkey guilty of mass violations of human rights in Cyprus.

But so far the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has failed to take measures against Turkey.
