Shadow cast on Clerides ties with Disy

THE TWO main topics in yesterday papers continued to be the bitter dispute between government spokesman Costas Serezis and ruling party Disy and fallout in the wake of the resignation of UN special envoy to Cyprus Dame Ann Hercus.

_ said that a shadow had fallen over the Presidential Palace's relationship with Disy. The newspaper said the rift had been caused because of the continuing dispute between Disy president Nicos Anastassiades and Serezis. Machi said it was clear there was a difference of opinion on the matter between Anastassiades and President Glafcos Clerides, especially since the President had made a statement to defend his spokesman.

_ reported that Serezis had accused Disy of using the issue not in national interest but for "internal consumption."

On Hercus, the paper said the UN envoy had left her post for reasons of political expedience, and not because of family obligations, as had been stated.

The paper said that Dame Ann had resigned because she felt the Security Council had left her exposed on the issue of a chapter on the missing which had been omitted from the latest UN Resolutions.

_ said Serezis had submitted his resignation to Clerides for the third time on Thursday, and that the President had once again refused to accept it.

The paper also reported that the Turkish flags painted on the Pentadaktylos mountain were to be freshened up and that Turkish Cypriots living in the occupied area had been asked to donate money for the project.

_ said that the Serezis issue had caused an open rift between the President and Disy, the ruling party.

The paper also reported that the list of successful Greek and Cyprus university candidates was ready and that it would be published on Monday.

_ said that Akel general-secretary Demetris Christofias would be going to London this afternoon for a kidney transplant.

The paper said that Christofias would be spending four weeks in England. The paper said that Christofias had said he would discuss why he was undergoing the operation in England and not in Cyprus, on his return. Haravghi also reported that Christofias would not be accompanied by a doctor on his visit.

_ said "Serezis is setting fires before he leaves." The paper said that the whole issue had taken on high tones with Serezis threatening to resign if there were no reprimands against Disy for the way the party had treated him.

_ also said yesterday was a critical day for the Cyprus stock exchange due to Thursday's slight fall in share values. The drop in share prices, according to the paper, has led stock brokers to the conclusion that the Stock Exchange is enduring.
