Cyprus Mail: Press Review in English, 98-10-30Cyprus Mail: Press Review in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Cyprus Mail at <http://www.cynews.com/>Friday, October 30, 1998 Suicide 'was murder after all'THE front pages yesterday featured a wide variety of issues and no common headlines. The main headline in Machi was "Roussos was killed". The paper says police sources say that evidence now seems to point to Nicholas Roussos being murdered. His body was found on Monday night after what was initially thought to be his kidnapping. Police then thought that Roussos had planned and staged an elaborate suicide. Phileleftheros focuses on the beating last Friday night of the illegal immigrants being held in Larnaca, and says the resulting political crisis has got worse. The paper reports Akel general-secretary Demetris Christofias' call for Justice Minister Nicos Koshis' resignation and head of Disy Nicos Anastassiades' reply that Akel can make changes when they win the presidential elections. Yesterday's defrocking of the Limassol priest photographed outside a Paphos building housing Romanian cabaret artistes was also previewed. Alithia commented on UN Permanent Representative in Cyprus Dame Ann Hercus' policy of confidentiality on settlement talks, saying "Hercus even hides the meetings". The paper says the Greek side places more emphasis on European Union accession talks than on Hercus' meetings with the two sides. It says there have been Turkish complaints that Greece is allegedly sabotaging its attempts to approach the EU. Simerini focuses on Attorney-general Alecos Markides' order to investigators to find the truth on the apparent ill-treatment of the illegal immigrants in Larnaca. The paper reports Markides as saying: "Let all the truth come out and responsibility be taken where necessary." Simerini also reports on the government doctors' threat that if the government does not take their demands seriously they will begin a series of strikes which could effectively close hospitals, one by one. Haravghi headlines with "Christofias throws down the gauntlet", focusing on the Akel leader calling on President Clerides to publicise the minutes of the Council of Ministers meeting at which he allegedly proposed the purchase of the Russian-made S-300 missiles. Christofias says that the issue was only brought up once the deal had been closed. It reports Christofias as saying: "What makes me sad is that a President of a Republic says things that did not really happen." © Copyright Cyprus Mail 1998Cyprus Mail: Press Review in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
