Police close to smashing drug ring

ONLY two evening newspapers were published yesterday as the dailies took Thursday off.

Apogevmatini, reported that a Limassol criminal gang, that had in the past been involved in murders and bomb attacks, was behind the import of 13 kg of marijuana found by the police. The police had gathered enough evidence to justify the arrest of the leader of the gang.

This ring had imported huge quantities of drugs from Albania, the police said. The statements by the two suspects caught with the marijuana, as well as additional information made the police confident that it would catch the "big fish" behind the trafficking.

Dilini reported that the first suspect, who was caught with 10kg of marijuana, had told the police that the second suspect had also brought 10kg. After a search of his house, the police found only three kilgrammes of marijuana, which led investigators to the conclusion that the remaining 7kg had already been delivered to the Limassol criminal gang.

In its lead story, Dilini reported that the UN had refused to acknowledge the official title of Glafcos Clerides, thus, indirectly, scrapping the Cyprus Republic. At the same time, they addressed Rauf Denktash in the same way that Clerides had been addressed: as "excellency".

The UN had taken this step to satisfy Denktash so that he would agree to take part in another round of proximity talks. The reaction of the Cyprus government was not known, although UN headquarters is said to have taken this decision after pressure from Turkey.

Apogevmatini warned that there were not enough school psychologists to give "the necessary help to students with homosexual tendencies". Psychologists visited each school once a month, which, according to the paper, was inadequate.

Psychologists did approach students with homosexual tendencies to "help them not submit to their deepest desires", it said.

Dilini also reported that the Bishop of Limassol Chrysanthos, recently had a "mysterious meeting" with a former Mossad agent, named Jacob Smoulevitch.

The agent had been been arrested in Switzerland with the Bishop's female friend Nina Petros and were both held in custody for 10 months, the paper said.

Apogevmatini reported that many students at a Laranca Lyceum were in the habit of going to class drunk, a fact that is of great concern to the headmaster.
